The old government is starting to crack down on tuner companies selling tunes that delete emission related parts on your engines. They just got Edge Products so I'd be expecting soon your options will be gone and those with them already maybe forced to return to stock and get your money back from the company's you bought them from.

Thanks although this is somewhat old news that's been posted before on the forum. EPA seems to be going after DPF filter elimination kits, which the 05/06 CRDs don't have, rather than the tunes that in fact don't eliminate pollution control systems.

DPF filters are apparently a huge problem for diesel vehicles that don't do a lot of highway driving which apparently keeps DPF temps up enough that regen is needed infrequently. Apparently "city" vehicles (fire trucks, ambulances, delivery trucks, etc.) are being stopped in mid operation while a DPF regen is done.

Another bright engineering idea with "unforeseen" real world consequences.

Too many folks publicly advertising that they want or have Egr or DPF deletes. Emission delete discussion should only be in the light of off-road use.

Yep... old news. I doubt they will target the CRD... but who knows. I am sure there are still ways around it...

Your tunes effect emisions with the almost total deactivation of the egr.

I've been seeing also they have been pulling over and towing diesels for "rolling coal",granted it's those idiots with 12" stacks and billowing black smoke so thick you can't see your hand in front of your face but it won't take long to start noticing others.

Well as we know the EGR is actually BAD for the engine. The tunes from GDE result in LOWER than stock emissions WITH the EGR. I don't have one. I have the ORM. I get less smoke and better MPG. Better MPG means lower emissions due to less fuel consumption. It's pretty simple. I know people have been pulled over due to excessive smoke. I had this issue on an old Volvo diesel, but the cop was unaware that it was a diesel despite the big "DIESEL" badge on the trunk. He said: "Sir, you did nothing wrong, but you are blowing a lot of smoke." I replied: "Oh, it's a diesel." His reply: "Oh, is it? Well carry on, and good luck getting home." Those were the exact words. Guess he thought my 30 year old diesel was not capable of being reliable, haha. Never heard of anyone getting towed. Regardless, I doubt anyone is worried. I sure am not. Where there is a will, there's a way... and a way around things if they try to be jerks, which likely won't happen to us "limited production" CRD owners... Most don't even know that the Liberty ever came with a diesel...\

By the way... this paragraph from the article was comical to me:

"The company, located in Ogden, Utah, sold more than 9,000 of these devices nationwide, over the period of January 2009 through April 2011. This resulted in an estimated 158 tons of excess PM emissions—equivalent to the emissions from 422 new long-haul semi trucks operating for a period of 29 years, according to the EPA."

The EPA has used VERY fuzzy math before, this would be yet another example. They frequently use giant measures (tons, lbs, etc) to describe something that comes from the tailpipe as a GAS and extremely lightweight dust / carbon. They also have been shown to be on a witchhunt against diesels for several decades now, for the simple fact that particulate matter can be seen.

ALL combustion creates the same resultant items: carbon dioxide, particulates (soot of carbon) nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide. The difference is in how much of each, and how large the particles are.

The EPA would have you believe that particulate matter from a diesel (15 micron+ in size), can "penetrate deep into the lungs and cause emphysema and asthma" while the particulates from gasoline engines (less than 5 micron down to less than 1 micron) somehow never get mentioned or considered in the same way.

IIRC, the human lungs are capable of filtering naturally down to about 10 microns in size. Anything larger, gets easily trapped in the mucous and expelled. How is it then, that ONLY diesel exhaust causes disease, when gasoline engines outnumber diesels 15-1 in this country, operate far more (by simple scale) and DON'T cause diseases?

Google 'the weekend smog effect' for some interesting reading on what happens when all the evil dirty polluting diesels go home for the weekend... And smog actually gets WORSE until they start up again on Monday. Why? Because smaller particles can stay suspended in the air longer - MUCH longer, where heavier particles cannot (think minutes versus possibly days) and could actually attract and catch the smaller particles because of static charge. Diesels might actually be cleaning the air of gasoline soot, simply by running!

Frankly... Car diesels are such a small percentage of the road population in the USA, and tuned versions even a smaller percentage of that group... I don't think we have much to be concerned about. Thanks for attempting some fear-mongering by spouting the EPA's anti-diesel rhetoric, but the logic doesn't wash.

Besides, the biggest benefit to our CRD community: Edge doesn't manufacture ANYTHING for us that does one thing with the emissions. The ONLY product we can buy is a "cheater chip" that messes with the fuel and boost pressure readings. Unsafely, I might add.

If they offer anything for on-road usage that did break the DPF or EGR... It isn't for our motors.

Unfortunately too many people bite off on retarded media hype. They think when they see black smoke from a diesel its bad. But yet tell that to the farmers who grow your food, semi trucks and trains that's transport everything, mining equipment that digs for those fancy diamonds on your wife's fingers, mining coal to keep you lights on, the trucks that deliver propane to heat your house, giant freighters that import all we buy from overseas, I could go all day. You ever watch MonsterMachines on history channel? One dump truck uses 5000 gallons of diesel in a day. Chit, I don't use that much in 5 years and all my vehicles I own are diesel, even my mower.

Europe has over 50% of their vehicles diesel.
My VW '12 Passat TDI gets 55mpg. With a tuner to delete the crap that makes a diesel unreliable will increase it to over 60mpg. Only the US EPA mandates this crap. Is it because other countries don't care about the environment? No, other countries understand that diesels don't pollute near as bad as the american stereotype.

Sheesh. Honey!!!! Get me a beer. Lol

The black smoke I complain about is from diesels with chips. Every time an a$$hat stomps on his accelerator pedal, billows of black smoke pour from the tailpipe.

One particularly stupid dude in a Chevy shortbox almost caused an accident the other day - people were almost driving into other cars just to avoid the billows (and no, I'm not overestimating the smoke. If anything, I'm not explaining well enough just how bad it was).

Those guys give diesels a bad name and encourage the general public to hate diesels as big polluters.

We had a diesel Peugot wagon (230, maybe) around 1980. Great car, would have benefitted from a turbo, but was still fun to drive. Then an Olds massive wagon with the 4.3 diesel which would have benefitted from an engine transplant - anything, absolutely anything would have been a better engine. However, they both got great mileage at a time when diesel cost a lot less than gas, making family trips more affordable. Neither vehicle billowed smoke and no one, unless we told them, knew they were diesel.

most of the black smoke stuff is from the cheap stuff - you put a resistor in a pressure line and the computer thinks the pressure is low and dumps extra fuel - really cheap easy and bad for the engine too.

personally I liked the way the CRD ran stock from the dealership - the tweaks I've made are to try and get it back to that level after the Chrysler mickey mouse fixes kicked in.

All this al gore BS with global warming is a scheme to make them money and make us buy more unnecessary things. Egr, carbon tax/credits, coal is bad, etc don't prove/improve anything. This not to say that some pollution norms shouldn't be respected, but going to insane extreme is not beneficial at all.
Side note, I believe the reason of us not having more diesel options is related directly to fuel sales, how much profit can be made from 50+ mpg cars versus 25+? Heck, even known diesels manufacturers bring g a restrictive/expensive set of their models here. I'd like to see a golf 4wd tdi like Europeans have, a Fiat 500 diesel that gets 60mpg, a BMW diesel that doesn't cost a fortune. Instead, we get vw R (not bad, but not a 4wd diesel), fiats with gasoline big (for the size of vehicle) engines, expensive BMW, etc... It's all a out money.

I dont know much about Edge products, but maybe if they had advertised their products as
"for off road use only" (and had better lawyers) they would have won the case.
There has been no shortage of emissions controls delete/defeat kits for sale for at least
30 years, for all fuel types. This is nothing more than the EPA trying to flex is muscle.

How can any State/Federal government entity fine any car/truck owner for emissions violations
without a nationwide mandate for emissions inspections?
Diesel owners getting fined for blowing black smoke? California is the only state I know of that
does that.

This is barely even a bump in the road for diesel owners who want to modify their engines for
better performance, efficiency, and reliability.

It is in the American spirit if ingenuity to circumvent any and all laws and regulations for
their own personal benefit.
I'm sure any corporate lawyer will agree with me on that!

I have a GDE ECO tune in my Liberty, I also have 2 years in a row of PASSED state emissions tests to go with said GDE ECO tune.

Here's a good one. Leeann, I know exactly what your talking about. Unfortunately with anything, there will always be a few retards out there to ruin it for the rest.

GDE Ecotune closes EGR partially sometimes. SEGR which is disconnectable shuts it completely, I have both. I have been through diesel emmissions 4years with no emmissions failures. AZ diesel emmissions on under 8500 lbs rating requires rear wheels on rollers and that is where 2006 KJ CRD gets waived due to ESP and traction control. Emmissions are only "good" from the manufacturer till 100,000 miles. At 160,000 miles I believe my vehicle is burning clean and acceptable.
That Utah tuner outfit (which is old news) just had it coming as those over 8500 lbs but under that "1.5, 2 ton" rated trucks get stupid obvious with the rolling coal and noise. Of course not all owners are like this but too many out there are and the Feds noticed.
The AzDOThas those portable scales combined with black smoke testers and test for reddye. They have officers stand in traffic lanes and pull EVERY diesel (truck, semi, 3/4 tons, 1tons etc) and test.... I have been in such queues twice now and both times the police wave me on as a non diesel!!!

I have heard that too, but I emailed Keith awhile back before I got my tunes and he stated his tunes completely disable the EGR.

Why in the world did so many take TJKJ's bait? Leann's post makes more sense to me than most of the things I've read. Exactly where does Al Gore and 'I'll kill to keep my guns' fit into the discussion?
