Just a shot in the dark ....... ..... on my XJ to reset the factory theft system you have to put the key in the door lock and physically lock and unlock the door with the key. Like I said, just a shot in the dark!

My daughter was driving home the other night and her 2005 Liberty CRD died.
The next morning I tried to jump it, and that did not work.
No check engine light, and the battery later checked out great.
Replaced the ignition switch and no luck.
Took the computer out and sent to GDE and got the ok and reprogram, re-installed, and no luck.

Mechanic 1, gave up, and I am out $200, to him, for doing what I guessed, just did not want to take to the dealer.
Towed to Mech #2 and paid him $185 to run a check on the wiring, and no luck, nothing out of wack.
We believe it is in theft mode.
We can communicate to the theft system, but the laptop would not communicate to the tranny or the PCM.
Does anyone have any experience with the theft system leaving you stranded or keeping the Lib from starting.
The starter spins and the relays are good. Called the dealer for some help, and they said bring it in, and we will try to fix..but he, the service manager, said that we will never figure it out and it is a common problem.
Help, please.
Thanks,
Jim

Have you tried to check out the manual?? If not try to check it out and I'm sure there you'll definitely find the some point that might help you out,, initially it feels like we had done everything correctly but sometimes some silly mistakes create some big problems,, just this out. 8)

With the ignition key turned on does the red theft mode light briefly or does it flash or does it stay on permanent.

If it flashes then it is not happy with the SKIM code coming off the chip in the key....lets you start the engine then it dies after a few seconds.
If the light stays On then it is happy with the SKIM code but the ECU has not had confirmation that the ASD relay has energised...jumping pins 30 and 87 in the ASD Relay socket should overide this.

Then turning on ignition should crank the engine...if ignition switch is good... and it should start unless you have a bad cam/crank sensor or fuel blockage.

If one of the interlock such as in Neutral or Park is not working or the ignition switch is bad then jumping pins 30 and 87 now in addition to having the ASD relay jumpered should start the Jeep.

Download the relevant year Service Manual here if you have not already done so..includes the circuit diagrams!: :)

My apologies, I should have been a good boy and posted the end result.
Ground out on a wire that was in the rear of the engine compartment.
Mechanic in Greensboro, found it but after changing his "estimate" 3 times, each higher than before, Jeep Guys in Downtown Greensboro. They fixed it but the experience was very frustrating.
Only one other issue to repair; power steering hose bust.....until yesterday.
Now no start again, with spinning, but at a good service shop in Greensboro, Carolina Tire and Auto.
They have repaired it twice since then, with excellent results...once for a power steering blow out and another time for just tires and alignment.
They are going to do the MAF cleaning and give it a go over....
My question to any one, I bought this with 134k on it and the dealer said it was up to date on all service....but later found this not to be the truth...no surprise there.
Now with 149k I am beginning to wonder did they do the timing belt? Is there a 1-2 hour inspection that can be taken to check to see if it has been done without breaking down the engine....and spending $1200 for parts and labor for naught?

Unless you have proof that the timing belt has been done assume that it has not been done. What =s proof - receipts with appropriate VIN, at DCJ corporate service record print out, etc. What does not = proof - mechanic looked at it and it's fine, previous owner said it had been done, etc.

No quick way to tell in fact even if you go all the way in you may not be able to tell. At a guess with 149,000 on the clock it was done and some time OR you have been extremely lucky.

What Greensboro are you in? If it's the NC one geordi is not that far away and can do the job for well under $1,200 including parts probably.

Thanks!
Carolina Tire has the Lib now, and they have even rebuilt one that blew the timing belt.
I will give them a chance to quote and post their reply.

Pretty complete parts kit from idparts http://www.idparts.com/timing-belt-kit- ... 7dbe2eb534

About all I'd consider adding are the 2 serpentine belt idler pulleys and apparently one can substitute in NAPA 36101 (just lose the big washer) or Precision Parts EP101. These pulleys should be replaced if the ones that are on now are leaking grease.
