Bet it's the CV joint on the transfer case end of the front driveshaft. Noises range from horrible metal-on-metal to faint clicking when the CV is shot. The sound may seem to come from the front or the rear - but since the bad CV joint is almost directly below the driver's seat we can tell ourselves the sound is coming from almost anywhere...

To confirm, roll under the Jeep, shine a flashlight at the rear CV and look for a rubber boot. If it isn't there or it's torn the CV joint is bad. The part is less than $60 shipped from driveshaftparts.com and about 30 minutes to an hour of your time to change.

Does the sound get louder/worse as you are turning? I have a bad hub bearing which I will be replacing when I get back to the States.

Which CV joint? I've only done the tcase one and the hardest part was getting the old shaft out. But putting a new CV on it was easy. That part didn't take 15 mins.
