Hi all,

Yesterday driving the Libby, ended up in traffic for about an hour with little forward movement, as traffic cleared went to accelerate placed the Libby in WOT and it suddenly lost power, threw a huge cloud of black smoke and went into limp mode. The CEL illuminated. Pulled off to the side of the road, shut the Libby down, restarted it and it ran fine with the CEL still illuminated. Took it to a mechanic today who said he'd need to do at least three hours of diagnostics at $70 an hour.

Any help in narrowing the problem down would be appreciated, Libby has clean air filter, and I just degunked the MAP.

Welcome aboard. At that mileage I hope the timing belt has been done.

No mechanic needs 3 hrs at any per hour price to plug a decent code reader in and pull the code which should be step one. After that time might be needed.

If that P0234 is a code you got pulled I'd lean toward a bad boost pressure solenoid and just replace it for all of $46 from IDParts (PN 4606226AC)

However, my initial thought is you blew a CAC hose but you say on restart it ran "fine"; by that do you mean it had plenty of turbo boost? If not pull CAC hoses and inspect, while off check air filter box to turbo hose for tear on the bottom and the turbo impeller for play (should have virtually none fore/aft or side to side). If it had boost black smoke cloud is too much fuel for the available air so in that direction. MAF sensor issue, stuck turbo vanes, transient boost pressure solenoid problem. Doubt it's related to fuel filter but when was it last changed?

Yes it sounds like you just blew an intercooler hose.

So, I bypassed the pressure solenoid as per papaindigo's post and the CEL went out, I have turbo boost and the Libby is running well. I ordered a new solenoid and waiting to get it to install it.
