So I absolutly hate the idea of having to install something and having to pay the dealership to hook a Starscan machine up to my car to get it to work. So I've been tossing the idea around to replace my radio with an aftermarket one. So my question is, if I installed an aftermarket radio and also added steering wheel controls ( obviously installing the necessary wires to hook the steering wheel controls to the aftermarket radio) would I still need to bring in my car to the dealership for a Starscan update?

I think the steering wheel radio and cruise controls are plug and play. My KK didn't come with cruise control, so I bought the mopar kit and it worked with no programming needed; I would assume the radio controls are the same way. The way I understand it, the switches only communicate with the clockspring, which sends the message out the the rest of the modules over the CAN bus. I do know you will need an adapter with the aftermarket radio to use the steering wheel controls unless the radio can hook up directly to the CAN bus.

I have installed aftermarket radio and my steering wheel controls work with an adapter. The calling features do not work, but those are specific to uconnect.

I just got the mopar kit that included a whole new wheel, because a non cruise control wheel doesn't have the cutout for the switch. There is a small 2-3 wire harness that goes from the switch to the clockspring.

So the biggest complaint, besides MPG, in my KK is there aren't controls on the steering wheel. So we can switch to the steering wheel with built in controls and it's just plug and play? What about the cruise control on the column?

it has been a while since I installed my radio but I payed $100 for an adapter piece that allows you to reprogram all the steering wheel buttons on the back like volume and channel change even pick up and hang up while calling. Its nice because you can make any of the buttons (radio wise) to be what ever you want. Forgot the name but let me see if I can find the brand again :banghead: like I mentioned its been a while. But its totally worth the $100

P.S. Checked the glove compartment and found it its made by PAC and its called radioPRO4 putting a link below for on amazon.com and its actually cheaper than I thought its $89.75 with free shipping

http://www.amazon.com/Rp4-Ch11-Radiopro ... =radiopro4

But for anyone else who wants to see if they can pick it up local its a "radioPro4 RP4-CH11" by "PAC"

I have the steering wheel volume controls, but was looking at getting a radio with bluetooth and voice control, and would want to add the steering wheel voice controls if I did so. Can these steering wheel radio controls be ordered/added without going through the dealer?

The voice control buttons will not work with aftermarket radio, that I know of. But I'm sure it might work with a stock radio that supports voice commands. I do still have my original radio with uconnect in storage somewhere
