Hello all. Forgive me if there is a section already located somewhere on here, but I haven't seen it yet. I am new to the forum. I also posted this in another section... but thought this section might recieve more views... comments.

Those of you who are "not 25 anymore" will likely relate more than those that haven't beat their bodies up yet (yes we were all young and indestructible once, but it catches up to you... trust me).

While being 60 is a little late maybe to get into off-roading... I'm not dead yet, so I'm researching. It'll likely be a older wrangler or a CJ if I can find one. rag top... larger than stock tires... but not too crazy.

A few days ago I sorta off-roaded my 94 Dodge 2500 2WD... while she will haul 15 or 18,000 down the highway just fine and has done so many times in her 286,000 and counting miles... the hard 80 psi load range E and stock 8800 suspension left a lot to be desired on 58 miles of wash board gravel. Too long on the wheel base and too low to get onto the back trails. I understand the Wrangler and their cousins are fairly stiff suspended too. Since I spent 3 years of my youth at 80,000 lbs with an air-ride suspension and an air ride cab, it got me thinking.

Have any of you built up an air ride on the Wrangler? or a CJ (I'd love to find an old v8 powered CJ)?

How about a body isolation airbag setup with an added subframe, thus leave the springs and/or coil suspension as it is? Its done on many (maybe all now) semi cabs....

Just wondering. Thanks in advance.

Dave

Have you ridden in a properly lifted Jeep lately? One that has a good suspension rides way better than stock, handles better and overall is much "easier" on the old behind than what most think.
I can see where your thought process is going as I've spent many a mile in some long haul truck starting in rough riding Cabover Freightshakers to last a long nose Pete with everything including the kitchen sink. Yes it was smoother than a Caddy at 95 MPH. But to set up an air ride like on say a Pete would require a lot of fabrication, be a lot taller than needed, linkages , everything would have to be connected with flexible lines/connections.
There are kits out there for a full air ride systems, but of course costly.
I think you'd be happy with a good full flex kit with properly air downed tires and you'd be amazed at how smooth the ride would be.
I'm 59 and started this goofy hobby over 40 years ago, lots has changed over the years as to how suspension systems are made and how they ride

Thank Tom...

I'll investigate those modern suspensions too...

Not that it would be all that practical but check out the 454'd 46 Willeys on eBay (item 181256687292) right now.
Sweet! I am considering a 2 or 3 from the 40s or 50s... I just like them. But 38K!!!???? He must have hired it all. It'll likely sell in the mid 20s I think, maybe 30 some.

Later...
