That's not to far from the Illinois Lost meet and greet today.

You're right. I'm busy today, though. I guess I wasn't paying attention to the IL LOST board. I had read there was, and then forgot all about it...

I had driven 190 miles without the water level changing. Yesterday, we ran the dogs out to an off-leash area to go play. The total trip was less than 20 miles. And the water fell an inch in the reservoir.

I plan on replacing all of my small coolant lines this spring when I do shocks/struts on mine.

I had one that was leaking on my (no longer operating) EGR valve and I just cut it a bit shorter and reconnected it.

I would check all the small coolant lines on the driver's side first.

I've resigned myself to cutting the hoses and plugging them, to see if that stops the water loss.

The reason I suspect the EGR cooler, is that when you start it, it puffs a tiny bit of blue and then starts warming up normally - as you would expect a diesel to. A little steam comes out the tailpipe in the cold (as you would expect).

AFTER you take off and go down the road a short distance, it sometimes begins to belch VAST quantities of something, that lasts for up to 2-4 miles. It will completely obscure the road behind you. It won't do it until you have pushed it a bit (accelerated). I have no obvious amount of water in the oil, though I've gone through about a gallon of coolant in 500 miles and 3 weeks. There is no pressure in the cooling system, like you would expect from a leak into the combustion chamber (like I had before the head gasket).

When the head gasket leaked, it would be pressurized in 2-3 minutes of running, and after shutting it off, if you pulled the cap a lot of air belched into the tank through the hoses. I get absolutely nothing like that now. After it's fully warm, it will only hold a slight bit of vapor pressure from the water being hot and steaming ( 195 Stant installed).

I'm thinking the water gets run through it AFTER it starts and the exhaust (or turbo) pressure pushes the water out of the EGR.

I found a bad hose, one of the little ones. The hoses felt and looked fine, buy when I gave it a tug to remove it, a small ring around the hose, near one end was obviously failed. I still plugged the hoses, so that no water goes through the EGR. The FCV is unplugged, as is the mass flow sensor. If I could have found the control wires while I had it apart, I would have unplugged it, too. But, since I only removed the fuel filter/water separator, I could not see well.

I sure hope that's the source of my leak.

Well, I drove it a few times with no obvious water loss... and then it lost water again.

It is possible that I had some air bubbles in the coolant, so I'll refill and see what it does.

My last tank of fuel did 26 mpg, and that was a mix of stop and go, in town, and highway driving. It's the best it has done, and I really like driving this thing, but dang, I have no money for fixing anymore. Besides, if something's broke, it's the head, and I just do NOT have money for another one.
