Saw a GC EcoDiesel when I took my CRD in for tranny issues..

It was already SOLD and I didn't get to look into it much...but after visiting the website...WOW, they are sure proud of it...$50k+ for the one on the lot.

I don't know when it happened, but the prices on vehicles is getting ridic IMO. When you start paying $50k+ for a car, suv or truck...and it loses 1/2 its value in 3 years or so...it makes it very hard to make a purchase anymore. It makes me very hesitant to get rid of my Jeep Liberty CRD Sport (since it does everything I need when it comes to value and use).

The dislike how car companies market diesels here in the US. Aside from 2500/3500 trucks, you pretty much have to get any diesel vehicle fully loaded. I think VW JUST stopped doing this.

The $4500 up charge for the diesel does not help the price either.... Test drove on the other day, nice, but only gets 20 mpg on the 4 x 4 model.

Actually, I believe the Ram 1500 can be had with a diesel in any configuration except the standard cab short beds. I just spec'd one on their website for under $30k in the Tradesman (entry level) trim.

I think it's amazing they make it as a diesel.
You're right, the prices of vehicles is so crazy these days.
I always say, it must have been nice "back in the day" you could BUY anything you wanted fully loaded with 5K in hand, maybe even two cars.

I think they will have a hard time selling the GC diesel at $50k. Their are a couple of other options in that price range. Audi Q5 TDI and Porsche Cayenne/VW Touareg.

I agree the price of new cars is out of wack..diesel are worse..

crazy..look at used diesel pickup( dodges)..I cannot replace my 99 for under 10k..most are over..
for a 99..15yrs old..sure there are always deals that are less..but these were 30k trucks new in 99..maybe

we'll be keeping what we have running as long as we can..the ram and jeep..
hopefully to the 25-30yrs mark..or 600k on the ram and 300k on the jeep..

Well replaced a bad Glow Plug cylinder #2 and the "modulator" for that plug...Jeep is running like it always does...right down the road. The new Cherokees just don't do it for me size wise...seem very small inside. They look OK to me but I will stick with my 2006 CRD! :pepper:

There was a time when diesel fuel cost less than gasoline. That lower cost coupled with the improved efficiency and better MPG a diesel delivered was a win-win for savings on operating costs. Now with diesel prices at up to $.70/gallon more than gasoline and diesel MPG reduced by DPF/SCR systems, it's hardly worth it unless the diesel is needed for heavy towing.

When I purchased my '01 Dodge Cummins, I calculated the fuel cost savings at that time and the better MPG would offset the $5000 premium for the diesel engine in about 100K miles. As years went by, diesel fuel prices caught up with and then blew by gasoline prices. When I sold my '01 there was 265K on the clock so I may have realized a return on the diesel. I purchased a new '11 Ram Cummins not just to have a diesel but for towing requirements. I do get much better MPG now with some tweaks but look at the cost of fuel now.

To buy a new GC diesel just for a daily driver, in my opinion, doesn't make economical sense. There are gas powered SUVs with comparable MPG figures and no premium for the engine.
