I've had 2 of the 5 original OE TPMS sensors go bad within the last two months. I probably need to go ahead and replace all 5 of them. The factory sensors lasted for almost 7 years, so I don't mind replacing all 5. If possible, I'm trying to avoid buying sensors that's been setting on the shelf for 5 years, thus resulting in a shortened lifespan. Is there a good source to buy sensors that have a recent manufactured date?

I have mine done at the dealer, since they need to be reprogrammed.

Did you replace them at random or all at once? If you don't mind me asking, what was the price that you paid for the part and install at the dealer?

The OEM ones, as I recall, are pretty pricey and I don't know what a dealer would charge for an install. However you can get the after market Dorman 974-001 which will fit at least the 05-07 Jeep Liberty from Amazon or other suppliers for like $22.50 each, don't forget one for the spare tire. Install at a basic tire place would run like $10 per wheel based on my son's experience. If the installer marks the tire and rim so they can be put back together with things in the same place there should be no need for a rebalance of the tires.

Notwithstanding the 05/06 FSM there is no need to train or reprogram the new sensors to work with the EVIC or, I presume the dumber dash light. The vehicle TPMS system should self program the new sensors within like 1-2 miles of driving; at least that's what the new sensor did on my son's 06 KJ CRD.

Sensor training used to be essential but was a real pain as it had to be done at every tire rotation on older TPMS equipped vehicles or the EVIC would not know which tire was in which location after the rotation.

Do a internet search for "TPMS", many hits; Amazon, EBay, and lots of others came up. Most can be bought for ~25 bucks with some having free shipping. 8)

Question :?: If the spare tire has no sensor, and you purchase one and install it, will the EVIC automatically pick it up, or do you have to go to the stealership and let them reprogram with their DRB III?

I'm familiar with all the online places that have the sensors at affordable prices. My concern was buying a sensor that was manufactured several years ago, thus resulting in a weaker battery life since they were shelved for so long.

My '07 came factory with a spare tire sensor. At every rotation interval, I do a 5 tire rotation. The EVIC reads all four tires almost instantaneously after each rotation. The EVIC will even recognize "low pressure" in the spare tire location. I don't know what would happen if I moved the spare to the roof though.

I'll call my dealer to find out the cost of each sensor, install, and to see if there is a warranty. I remember at one point in time that my dealer said they guarantee all their work and labor for 3 years or 32,000 miles.

That's a good price for the part and labor. I might call Firestone (where I purchased my tires) and see what they will do. I hate that firestone doesn't install customer supplied parts. I may give Discount Tire a call and see if they will install customer supplied parts.

That is my experience as well

Do they have a manufacture date? Are the batteries replaceable? :?:
Never thought about the battery thing?
thanks,

PS, my spare right now has no TPMS

I don't know if they have a published manufactured date like a car battery would have, but they do have a battery. From what I have read, the battery is not intended to be replaced. Those who have tried have said that it would be difficult to crack open the sensor, replace the battery, and put it all back together with the expectation that it would work properly.

The batteries are not replaceable and I cannot speak to battery shelf life in an unused/not installed state or if the units come with any date of manufacture information but heh who knows when the original TPMS sensors went into the DCJ assembly line bin before they were installed. I can say that TPMS battery life seems to run 5-12 years with an average of about 7 years and that those on my 05 are still fine as of today.

FYI Dorman's TPMS learn procedure reads "Drive vehicle for at least 10 minutes while maintaining a continuous speed over 15mph. The TPM system will automatically learn new sensor IDs and will clear any DTCs during this time."

If you have an EVIC it will display pressure for the 4 tires on the ground and a "spare low pressure" message if the spare tire pressure is low. I would assume that if your spare lacks a sensor and you add one that the TPMS system will recognize it.

OEM sensors PN 68001696AA run in the $75 range IIRC

After making a few phone calls and consulting with the wife, we've decided to purchase the Dorman TPMS sensors on an as need basis. Discount Tire said they would install my customer supplied part for $10 bucks per tire. So for $21.24 each and free shipping, I think that's the way to go. A big thank you to papaindigo for pointing me to Amazon and the Dorman TPMS Part #974-001. 8)

My dealer quoted me $92 for the part and $15 for the install. So that's close to what you paid.

My EVIC only shows only 4 tire pressures; my spare does a TPMS on it, I looked. :)

Guess I will have to let the air out of the spare to see just where it shows up at.....

WWDiesel don't bother with your spare take a look at your owner's manual instead. The EVIC will only display PSI for the 4 tires on the ground; if you make the spare one of the 4 on the ground then its PSI will show on the EVIC. The EVIC will also display a low pressure message, probably will ding also, for whichever of the tires has a low pressure (25% low if I recall) including the spare and if any of the sensors is bad the EVIC will show check TPM system. Absent a check TPM system message or a spare tire pressure low message then you can conclude that the spare tire pressure has not triggered a low pressure message and its TPMS is ok.

Of course if you want to lower the spare tire pressure just to see if the spare low message appears on the EVIC then have at it.

Thanks papaindigo, good info to know! :D
Funny how the EVIC knows if the spare is on the ground, or not!
