I have a 05 crd 98,000 miles GDE eco full torgue tune. Every now and then when i take of forward or reverse it seems like the tc locks up and it will stall out when i go on the brakes if i dont get it out of gear. I thought it was the converter so i did that and the timming belt last week but it still does it. I also had a flush and service on the trans

When it does this has it been sitting for a relatively long period of time like say 6hrs+? If so that's related to the transmission fluid drain back issue. Normally the issue is after sitting the tranny won't engage and the "cure", other than new OEM filters and maybe a new pump, is to crank up; shift to neutral; hold a high idle (12-1500rpm) for 15 seconds or so; and then drive off (if tranny still won't engage repeat). However, when I had the issue there were occasions where I would crank up and the tranny would appear to engage but then I'd experience a "hard" stall (almost like the whole drive train locked up) on the way out of the parking lot and the engine would simply quite unless I was extremely quick on the shift to neutral. Upon recranking up if I ran the above drill the vehicle drove fine although once or twice it thru a CEL that went away after like 3 drive cycles.

Weird, almost like the transmission "burped".

Whole issue went away after SunCoast installed their TC and the transgo kit with new filters and fluid.

Ya i had the pump replaced and the tranny resealed and it still does it. It does like you described almost locks up the drive train i am considering having the tranny rebuilt but i wanted to make sure it was not a electronic problem.

Magnifine makes an inline filter (with magnets inside) you put on the return line to remove small metal particles such as steel that an accumulate in the valve body. Since the valve body is controlled by electromagnets, some of the small steel particles can accumulate in there and cause shifting problems. I would go with a Transgo valve kit, do the valve part and clean out the valve, then put a 3/8" Magnifine on the return line from your trans cooler that returns to the sump.
15K after I installed my Suncoast, Transgo kit including the front pump kit, the shifting was OK, but not as good as I wanted. After installing the Magnifine filter, the shifting improved in a couple thousand miles and works good at 115K.
Some shops don't want to use the Magnifine because they cut into their repeat business. Ford uses/used Magnifine filters on their factory rebuilds to reduce warranty claims.
If you are a bolt it on only guy, Suncoast and others sell rebuilt valve bodies with the latest improvements if you have the money.

I just talked to my local transmission expert today about this very problem. It has happened to me about a dozen times and only after cranking up in the parking lot at work and driving about 100 feet and applying the brakes. It shutters and unless you are quick enough to shift into neutral, it will stall the motor completely!
I do not think the drain back issue is the problem as I crank in neutral and let run for several minutes before driving off and it engages just fine and pulls and feels normal.
My transmission guy told me these transmission were notorious for having a weak or worn oil pump. We talked about planning a TC replacement either a Suncoast or Euro in the spring and he said he would replace the pump at the same time and cure the shutter problem. It will scare you if you do not know what is happening!

I plan to service the trans very soon and I will replace the drain back valve while I am in there and see if it cures the shutter issue.... :)

Yup, just remember to use good hose clamps. I put on two pairs of Vise Grip hose pincher clamps, cut the return hose up by the trans cooler, installed the Magnifine. One of the clamps worked loose, so I replaced it with a better one and it held with out leaking.

Perfect, thanks warp! I have a longer hose for my custom cooler anyways, plenty space to install it.

I had this problem after transmission service. The issue is simple to fix. Add more transmission fluid. It could require as much as one additional quart.

was thinking to do this. Mine would shudder when I slowed to a stop and recover on cold mornings. Once I've been driving a mile or 2 through town the problem would go away. I believe it to be a hair low given that it goes away when warmed up i.e. fluid expansion? :juggle:
