FAULTY GLOW PLUGS

Hello everybody. Here is the problem. Yesterday morning I cranked my 2.8L Diesel Jeep Liberty 2007 and the ETC lightning light popped up. I called the dealer and a mechanic told me to let it warm up, shut it off and crank it back and see what happens... That's what I did and the ETC didn't come back up. In the afternoon I had it checked with the OBDII and the computer reported a faulty GLOW PLUG at cylinder 4. The dealer told me that it is out of warranty (go figure) and that the cost of the glow plug is around 100$ + VAT (133 euros) + work, so around 200$ in total + VAT (220 euros). What? I checked over the web and I found out that the cost of a glow plug is about 20 euros, and that would be for the best glow plug that I can find. Now the question is... What if I buy a glow plug and I replace it myself or ask another mechanic (not a Jeep Dealer) to do it? I read somewhere that there could be voltage issues, would this happen with a glow plug of an higher voltage as well? (for example I put a 11V glow plug in substitution of a 5 or 7V). Thank you all!

Etecno is there in Europe and I'm sure you can get a 7V (That's what ours are unless you have had yours flashed, which you should know) glow plug pretty cheaply.

It's a drop-in replacement for your ceramics, there are write ups on these forms how do it yourself with some pretty basic hand tools in about 4 hours for all 4.

Cylinder 4 isn't bad, you just have to remove the fuel head to make it easier to get to, which is just 2 bolts and push it out of the way.

I believe the stock 2007 KJ CRD came with 5 volt metallic glow plugs. There is a plastic insulator near the end of glow plug. It is RED with the 5 volt glow plugs and WHITE with 7 volt ceramic plugs.

Got it... Unfortunately I bought it used so I don't really know whether they have been replaced or not (and flashed accordingly). Tomorrow morning I'll take a look, looking for the white or red ring (if there's any on my glow plugs). I talked on the phone to the owner of ETECNO (he's a very good guy and very passionate in his job) and he also believes they should be 7 volts; he suggested to have a look to the module which delivers current to the glow plugs and read the output directly from it.
Unfortunately, after having a look at the Glow Relay, I realized that the only thing indicated is the voltage of the relay itself (which is 12V). I am wondering now how I can check the freaking voltage of the glow plugs... By the way the relay is the Bosch 0281003034, does it make any sense to you? Do you guys know if it has a fixed output voltage?

Ok, here are some updates... The glow plug 1 shows a red ring and the dealer said that the part number for my glow plugs is 68020557AA that shows up as a 5 volts glow plug. I believe it should be enough to go for a 5 volts glow plug. What do u say?

Yes, that is a 5V glow plug.

Dear all, thanks for your awesome support. Here are some info that could be useful. As Hexus pointed out, Jeep Liberty 2007 2.8L CRD 120kw came out with a 5v glow plug system. Yesterday I had my 4th cylinder glow plug changed (time=15 min, cost=a hand shake) and now it works just fine. The part number for the original glow plugs is 68020557AA, just in case you are looking for the BOSCH plugs. I do recommend the italians ETECNO Gx2123 by the way, they are totally metallic, no ceramic parts, and they fit just fine. I think I'll change the remaining plugs when I'll have some more time. Cheers

Are the ETECNO Gx2123 plugs 5 volts?

Yes, definitely! GX2123 are 5 volts, GX3123 are 7 volts.
