Stopped into the dealer today to get the control arm recall finally done and he said the gas tank recall just showed up on the computer dated today but they don't have the parts to go about it yet. If you don't know the recall yet it is for the gas tank catching fire with a rear end collision. The fix is a Mopar trailer hitch installed at no charge, if a hitch is already installed they inspect it and replace it with a new one if necessary. Im not sure if its all Liberty's or just the KJ.

Don't want to sound rude, but I'm pretty certain this news is a couple of months old.

The existence of the recall and what it involves has been out there since like June. However, this is the first hint that the recall is actually getting close to happening.

I think there were a few dealers who may have done it on their own, but my local dealer has been playing dumb up until this point. They tell me they only know the same things I've been told on the news. Maybe this news means that the trigger has been pulled by Chrysler and things will get rolling.

There has been lots of chat about this over on the CRD part of the forum as it's unclear if the recall is just for gasser KJs or includes the diesel ones. As far as I know no one has posted that they have received a letter and have had the work done.

As of the end of October things were reported to still be on hold. See http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/31/autom ... calls.html

What I recall was the nhtsa was trying to get Chrysler to admit there is a problem and Chrysler's response was the Liberty's wasn't any less vulnerable than other manufacturers. Or something along those lines, plus I took a look on the NHTSA's website and couldn't find a recall nor an "investigation."

Subscribing for info. Since my Jeep didn't come with the hitch receiver, I would love to have one! I hope this recall comes to fruition. :pepper:

Heres to hoping they do something soon so we won't have to hear about it any longer!
KJs are no more prone than any other vehicle, ever look at a Wrangler or a dozen others out there. Too bad Chrysler caved in

It will destroy the whole look outback and is stronger than some hitch. Plus the rocklizard has a hitch built in. Om not jumping on the bus with this recall. But I have a hitch so I guess I dont count.

There lies the difference! My RL doesn't have the built-in hitch receiver.

Here's my RL bumper. RL gave me a Mopar hitch receiver that he took off another rig. But this one is a little rusty. If I get the recall, I'll remove it and take the Jeep into the dealership to get a new one. If I don't get the recall, then I'm pulling this one off, having it sandblasted, and then powder coated or line-xed.

That's because the impact was up high on the Jeep, not down low in the gas tank area.

When I had recall work done for lower rear control arms, and transmission parking pawl cup retainer bracket I had to go 'round and 'round with Chrysler customer care about NOT replacing my Moog lower ball joints in the front because, according to my dealership, all applicable recall work had to be done in order for their mechanics to get paid for doing the work. The lower ball joint recall was not showing up as having been done, even though the ball joints had been replaced once with "stock" type ball joints, either by the previous owner, or the Toyota dealership's used lot that I bought my Liberty from. I had the lower ball joints replaced by an independent shop, and Chrysler Customer Care reimbursed me...One would think that after cutting me a check for almost $400 that they would show this work as having been done...
One of my last statements to the Chrysler Customer Care rep while going around and around about getting my recall work done was "Should I get a lawyer now, or wait until my rear lower control arm breaks and causes me to have an accident? LMAO, when I pulled my Jeep's history through the VIN, it was purchased , and titled in upstate NY, the registered in NC three months later...It never spent a winter in a "rust belt state", but I figured if I get some parts for free, why not?
I have a universal frame hitch (Reese Towpower) that has had the center section flipped upside down, so the hitch doesn't hang down so far in the rear, along with a custom/homemade rear bumper. I do not want another hitch, and I hope that doesn't affect me from getting any future recall work done.
