Does the CRD use a distributor or coilpacks?

For ignition it uses pistons, valves, and cylinder heads, in other words - compression.

No spark plugs either. 8)

The diesel is a lot more simple of an engine design then the gas engine.

I've been trying to find the firebox on this thing. I've never seen a car that doesn't need wood for the boiler and doesn't emit steam as I go down the street. Egads- the horn doesn't even seem steam powered!

yuk yuk yuk

Short answer: No. The CRD or diesels in general do not have a coil pack or distributor.

I'm guessing you are new to diesels? If you would like to know how diesels work and you would like a detailed explanation, we can give you that. The only dumb question is the one that is not asked. Sorry, but your short question, without follow up, led to some jabs.

As noted before diesel are compression ignition engines. In the case of the CRD it's compression is around 23 to 1 over twice that of the most gas engines. There is no fuel to burn until it is directly injested it at the correct time, this is comparable to the spark plug firing at the correct time in the gas engine.
Gas engines are less efficient than diesels in the conversion of fuel to power to move the rig. In essence more power is allowed to be converted to power and less has to be wasted going out the exhaust or cooling system. The heavy duty parts on the diesel can operate in a warmer environment longer. Diesel fuel also gives off more heat energy per gallon burned.
