So my jeep has been great. 2006 limited 114k. I have had a small shudder since I bought it back in October.
I have been planning to install a new converter since the test drive. Fast forward to three
weeks ago. My wife and I where driving along about 30 to 45 mph heard a small pop.
Engine went to red line. I let off on throttle. Noticed that I have lost all forward motion.
Pulled to the side of the road. Tried to shift to other gears. Nothing. Heard a slight
whining noise. Shut it off and called for a tow. Figuring it was the transmission.
I got a transmission from a wrecking yard with 95k. Ordered new pump, converter, filters, and atf. Planning to just swap them.
I haven't dug into it till today. My two month hold die hard platinum was dead as a rock.
So that was fun to find. I checked the level of the atf. It was way above the full hot mark by like and inch and a half.
I vacuumed what atf I could thru the dipstick tube. I popped the pan off. Atf looked fine on a rag but dark in a white bucket.
It didn't smell burnt. The pan was clean. No chucks or shavings. Solenoid pack looked fine. Started to check the filters.
The flat filter was way lose but still in the pump seal. It was not seated all the way to the shoulder of the filter neck. Removed and checked filter seams. Seams were ok. Pulled pump seal. The seal looks different than the new one I got. The old filter is from 2010.
So I have a theory that it sucked air the day I lost motion. I have replaced the spin on filter and flat filter tonight. Planning to
fill and test tomorrow. I am hoping that fixes it. I don't have a garage to work in. Would like some time to rebuild the wrecker trans.

I hope that fixed it too, but your initial description sounds like you sheared the flexplate bolts or sheared the input shaft off the torque converter. I would take out the rubber access plug above the starter and feel the condition of the flexplate.

FWIW

I destroyed my clutch packs after 15min of driving with air being sucked into the trans pump.

Thanks catcrd & rich
I did not make any progress today.
I did go back and look thru the previous owner records.
Trans filters where changed in 2010 at 77k. 6 quarts added.

RIch when you sucked air did you lose all gears?

Catcrd
How would one tell if they sheared input shaft off torque converter?
When I had the pan off yesterday I didn't see anything unusual besides the loose flat filter.

There is an access hole above the starter. It has a rubber plug. Remove the rubber plug. Rotate engine (clockwise ONLY) to find the four bolts that hold the flexplate to the torque converter. The bolts can come loose and fall out. You might have to remove the starter for easier access.

Filled the Trans back up after putting the new filters on
It didn't work. Still no movement. The sound is a soft high pitch hum.
I am capable of the dropping the tranny and all but lack the time and a decent place to commence work.
So I'm gonna farm it out. Doing a timing belt in the driveway was a lot easier than trying to drop the tranny.
When a torque converter fails what breaks? Wouldn't I have found a lot of metal?
Hopefully I'll have all the answer by the end of the week.
Had my die hard platinum checked. Didn't pass was replaced under warranty.

Hopefully you either upgraded the TC or went with the Euro variant.

Got it back today
I went with a euro variant I hope R8037142AA
I have only driven a few miles with is today.
It feels better then before. My battery was dead but unsure how long. I did have the battery
disconnected for few days. Would that help the tcm and shift points?
The shudder is gone for now and hopefully for good.
Next is to install my week101 elbow kit.
