Has anyone made a custom cold air intake on a KK?

The intake tube is stock and opens up behind the passengers side headlight.

I gave it a little help.

From what I can tell, it made no difference! :-)r

I'm thinking about replacing the box with a cold air

After weighing my options I've decided to go with a remanufactured Jasper 3.7L V6 engine. http://www.jasperengines.com/index.php
The Jasper company ships the engine with all new pistons, rods, crankshaft, lifters and valves, water pump, oil pump, oil pan, etc. so the only thing original is the block, which they clean up real good and make sure everything is in spec. It is run-tested at the factory and comes with 0 miles and a 3 year, 100,000 mile warranty that covers not only parts but labor too should anything go wrong. I hope to have the KK for a long time, so I thought I'd go this route rather than gambling on a junkyard motor that has an unknown history and has been sitting around for 5 years after it was in an accident. The difference is about $2000, but to me it's worth it. Hopefully I'll get another 200K+ miles from this thing.

If you don't mind me asking. How big of a repair cost would this be with that engine. I'd love to keep my KK for a long time.

My shop quoted me about $4,000 for the Jasper engine and $2000 labor for installation. The junkyard motor with 30,xxx miles would have been $2000 with $2000 for installation. The difference in price is all new engine components and the 3 year 100K warranty on parts and labor with the Jasper engine. Jasper also corrects OEM defects like the propensity of the 3.7 to drop valve seats. That to me is extra insurance. A portion of the higher price is that I'm in Philly, I think. Stuff just costs more here in general because it's a city in the northeast. If I were in southern Michigan it would no doubt be somewhat less to do the same job. But I have had this mechanic for 8 years now and trust his judgement and good workmanship, and I know I will have a good motor for the long haul. Peace of mind is worth it I think.

My mechanic also said he'd take some pictures for me as they do the engine swap. Looking forward to seeing it. The new engine should be in on Thursday and the work completed by Monday if all goes according to plan. That's crazy fast for an engine swap, I think.

Sounds like a good plan of attack

Thanks Tom! 8) Now to work the plan.
A buddy of mine lent me his beater hunting truck to use this week while the Jeep is out of commission. It is a dented up 90's Toyota Tacoma base model with a radio and a stick shift. Awesome truck! It weighs about nothing, so I can practically chirp the tires on takeoff. I am used to my heavier KK with the 245/75/16's and stock 3.73 gearing! :-)r

Wow! I figured an engine swap would be about that amount. I guess 6k is a lot better than a new vehicle.

I gotta say that I love the OEM look of these new lights. They aren't OEM but you can't tell the difference. They actually came with Sylvania headlights and fogs. Im going to keep these for a spare. For the fogs I'm not wired to run those but I'll just leave them in.

Here are the old. I guess I'll just trash them. The adhesive just doesn't come off.

I like your KK's new look, LKW... The black grille and headlights alongside the blue paint makes it look classy and tough at the same time.

If you'd like to wire up your fogs inexpensively, here is a good wiring diagram I came across a few years ago:

Idk what it is, but the tires look tiny in that pic lol. Looks good though. Have any shots down the side of the KK to see how they sit in comparison of the fenders?

Looks good. Did you end up needing to adjust the lights at all or were they about the same as your stock lights?

Mine should be here tomorrow and hopefully I can get them installed tomorrow, too.
