Mine has run the last 100k miles on Waste Vegetable Oil (about 3 cents per gallon filtered) I get about 90 miles per gallon of diesel purchased (low estimate) Oil changes cost a lot that is true. Using your same math I spent $4500 on fuel. Probably less. I have barely changed anything on mine with 173k miles. Mine is stone reliable next to what most people are posting. So by your math I have paid for the $12k purchase price in fuel savings because mine burns grease. I think mine is so reliable because I live in south Florida.

In my mind the only reason to buy a Liberty is to get the diesel engine.

I had the CRD it was fun, but I like to tinker with Diesels. I always wanted one when they first came out. I got it played with it, spent $$$$$, then moved on to a Excursion. My mother has owned her 07 Nitro since new 3.7 with 6 speed. Averages 18 town 23 hwy. Hasn't done anything to it in 80000 except oil changes. I wish I could say that about my Lib when I got it at 50K sold it at 100K. Another thing to remember is part availability. Lots and lots of 3.7 gassers out there, CRDs are in short supplies, so this plays a big part in parts and prices. It basicly comes done to preference. When diesel was cheaper than gas it was a great investment. But since its a dollar more, that leveled the playing field between small gas and diesel vehicles.

Id say go for it if you plan a timing belt job for it soon after purchase.

don't listen to those that say the gasser is the best. sure its just fine but the CRD is really not all that bad... well at least mine has not been. Mine has been reliable and Id say as reliable as the outback I had traded for it.... maybe better.

I have had few issues. the thermostat did go on mine at 55k, I found that online for about $150. Outback thermostat needed replaced too so thats a wash. my serpentine tension er went out last summer and the dealer couldnt get one in a known time for less than $275 but Idparts.com now has that and many many other CRD parts for less and faster than your dealer can get. the alternator pulley has a decoupler that can give trouble but A reman one is about $200 not much more than other for other cars, just don't get one from Advanced ask how I know that!

timing belt parts are $400 from Idpaarts and I had a good local dealer that has CRD knowledge change mine for 600 in labor. Gasser Outback required a timing belt at 100k to and same cost. as for maintenance like oil changes DIY with proper oil from tractor supply (on sale) or walmart and quality filters and its not much more expensive than a gas car.

my CRD gets same or better MPG as the outback and its far more capable that the outback and fun to drive. if you spend on a tune you like I did you should be good to go

I also should add that its my only vehicle other than a mountain bike.

Like I said, "You have more money into that, than I have in both of my CRDs."

My mods are for coolness factor and the communist crusade against diesels.

Even OTR class 8 truck diesels are plagued with problems.

A Jeep is not a cheap vehicle to own either way if you are going to the dealer or a mechanic.

Just
Empty
Every
Pocket

People have told me how much all Jeeps break and cost to fix, but it is not a problem to me, mine are hardly any problem and easy to fix. Plus with an ally like ID parts, you can not even use the hard to get parts argument any more.

I bet not, more so if you bought yours new.bet I paid less for my KJ then one of your CRD's and my SFA swap most likely is less or the same as the other CRD bought. The paint was free, insurance paid that along with the original lift.

I was talking the so called expensive CRD mods, diesels always cost more then the dime a dozen gasser as a first cost. Any change to the assembly line always does cost more. I want to know about all the money we have to spend on the diesel after we buy it?

Not sure why people witch about how much the oil changes are on the CRD. Rotella T6 is cheaper than the Mobil 1 i used to put in my previous vehicles, and they took just as much oil. Most GM LS/V8 motors are taking 6+ quarts, both my LS2 GTO and my dads Trailblazer SS did.

Plus, I got nearly 20 gallons of Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck Oil for like $8 a gallon back when Advance had their fire sale. Can get any oil much cheaper than that.

It doesn't matter anyways since I probably would not be driving a Jeep Liberty if it did not have the diesel whether it uses more oil or not.

I live at 9,000 feet and commute about 90 miles a day (4,000 ft elevation change), and the CRD is an amazing vehicle at altitude. I average a combined mountain, highway, city driving of about 25mpg without a tune. I don't tow with it; I have a Cummins dually for that, but it would pull my camper OK if needed. I have no interest in the 3.7 Liberty where I live; just another gutless vehicle to drag up and down the mountain...I would just buy a Wrangler and skip the Liberty all together. It is really too bad they never developed the 4bt for passenger car use. A Wrangler with a 4bt would have been the perfect vehicle

I purchased my '06 Liberty new in April, 2006 so I was able to break it in properly. Before 150,000 miles, I replaced the FCV, Intake Hoses, timing belt, and the Fuel Head. After 150,00, I replaced the glow plugs, EGR, and the defective Fuel Head again. I also did the lift pump mod at 170,000. I pulled and cleaned the MAP every fuel filter change, which I did every 15,000. Currently, it needs a new thermostat. Except for the issue with trying to pull codes, I have no complaints. Although, the vehicle can be a real PITA for somebody who isn't comfortable working on them especially troubleshooting.

Theoretically, in terms of diesel vs. gas, the cost of parts should be offset by longevity. Although, I am not holding my breath with the longevity of this VM 2.8; I will drive mine until dies so I will see. It is definitely not my Cummins, and I don't expect the long block to last as long, My biggest fear would be getting one used not knowing how it was driven or maintained. My X took mine for a year after our divorce, but I bought it back from her when she was ready to get a new car. I like it enough to buy it twice.
