Tell me this isn't the turbo... High pitch noise around 2k rpm and gets louder as revs climb.

Just got it back from a dealer to fix a steering rack issue. Not sure what they could have done to the motor...

Someone else recently posted a video with the exact same noise. I think he wound up taking it to the dealer for diagnosis but I don't know what the result was.

Since your steering rack was recently repaired, I would first look at the power steering fluid level. Then check the power steering pump, pulley and belt.

I would also take out the drive belt and see if the noise is still there. At least that eliminates some possibilities

Oh, and check if they properly tied your air hoses, that noise sounds like some hose is not properly secured. I think they removed the air filter and case to get to the rack, so it may also be possible they forgot to but something back properly.

Sounds like a boost leak.

Did the dealer remove the intake elbow to service your rack? If so did they reinstall it correctly? Did they use a new gasket?

Start by checking the 4 nuts that secure the adapter and make sure they are tight. Also check the 2 hose clamps.

If all of that looks good... Did ALL of the old gasket material get removed from the intake flange before (re?)installing the elbow adapter?

It sounds like either a boost leak or a rubbing belt/faulty idler. It's constant at any RPM and I can hear your turbo kick in over the top of that noise when you hit the fuel and run the RPM's up.

Check your CAC hoses on both sides, (remove them completely) and check for leaks, also check for tears at the end where the clamps connect.

After that, I'd start checking the belt.

No, wait.

Don't do any of that. Take the Jeep back to the Dealer, instruct them that there was no noise when you brought it in, and now there is. Whatever THEY DID, has created this issue, and they are responsible for fixing it.

So...I took it back to the dealer and instructed them that this issue was not here when I dropped the Jeep off and to fix it. They call me back and tell me it's the turbo and it needs replacement. I ask them to walk me step by step through the diagnosis which they explain to me: we put it up on the rack and had a guy listen to it to confirm it's the turbo. I laughed over the phone and say that's some diagnosis - you didn't check any of the hoses, belts, idlers, etc?? Nope.

They want to charge me 8hrs of labor to get into the turbo! And they're saying no work they did would have caused this noise. I told them it's hard to believe that I dropped this off without this noise, yet it immediately surfaces when I drive off the lot? Their response: it's a 2005 with tons of miles. I didn't think 90k miles was a lot?... I told him this is ridiculous and I'll pick it up.

Anyone near Boston want to lend a hand?

8hrs to change out a turbo is a hoot. More like 2-3 actual work hours if they are bright enough to soak the exhaust manifold nuts in penetrating lube to prevent breaking studs.

Doesn't sound like a turbo (rpms seem way too low) but that's easy to check. Pop airbox to turbo hose (check for crack on bottom just in front of turbo); grab turbo fan; should be no more than very slight fore/aft play side to side play should be something that you can barely feel plus fan blade tips should not be rough from hitting the housing.

Sounds more like a pulley or a boost leak. I don't have a clue what they would have to have done to "other" things to deal with/get to your steering rack issue or what they might have accidentally dinged while doing so but Flow Control Valve, intake elbow and EGR connections come to mind.

Boston area makes me think of Corey Evans at ID parts which isn't that far away depending on where you are located.

Just go over the hoses, start with passenger side, take your intercooler to turbo hose out, air filter and air filter box out, the air filter to turbo hose out. Check for turbo play with engine off (obviously), grab the turbo impeller nut, move side to side and front back. Post your best guess for the play in the turbo (1/32 sideways should be OK, no play front and back is ok). Then reconnect everything back, making sure the hoses are properly seated (straight with no spaces). I bet the idiots messed something when they reassembled those back up. And do yourself a favor and never go to a dealer, I think they get medals based on how stupid and incompetent are...

You need some long 1/4 extensions to reach the nuts on the hose clamps, that's the only "special" tool.

Tell me about it. I went to a dealer in Chicago back in January out of necessity and this dealer trip was to fix the Chicago dealer's mistake (I have a thread on it). I wish I recorded the conversation; I bet it'd be a youtube hit for the crap they were giving me.

I've got something very similar going on with mine as well. It's kinda loud and coming from the drivers side, reminds me of a power steering failure. I recently installed the intake elbow kit so I suspect it's a leak. I reinstalled all the hoses and clamps but still there so I think it's leaking at the intake elbow gasket. I thought it might be the turbo failing as well cause it sounds like it when under the hood. But the closer I listened it seemed to be coming from the drivers side. Have not checked the turbo for play yet but I did pop the hose off at the intercooler and could not replicate the sound at any rpm. Once I shoved the hose back on, the sound came back. Hope I'm right!!!

Not sure is the sound may be caused by this, but also check your air box to turbo hose, this is known to crack on turbo side from oil.

Did ALL of the old gasket material get removed from the intake flange before installing the elbow adapter? The old gasket has a tendency to come off in chunks.

You have to get in there with acetone and a razor and make sure. If you don't get all of it off, it will leak and sound exactly like the video posted.

Then put Permatex on both sides of the new gasket and torque down the studs good and tight.

Grava in Medford. Luckily I live around the corner from the dealer (~half mile) so it was nice and slow back to my place.

I noticed the noise now starts around 1300rpm. I'll tear into it this weekend and see what I can accomplish. Seriously, I would welcome any and all help from anyone that is local. I'd be happy to reimburse for time/travel, as well as provide food and drinks.

First off.... Have you checked for turbo shaft play?

Here is the procedure.... Remove air box, remove turbo to airbox hose/tube, stick finger in turbo, locate turbo shaft with finger, move shaft up down and front to back...... if there is no play or little play then turbo is good.

Sounds like you have a flange to intake leak, sucking air...... use smoke from a lit cigarette around the intake to check if it is pulling/sucking in smoke.

Five min in and I found the issue... Turbo inlet hose. Broke clean out of the turbo. At least I got to confirm I have ZERO play in my turbo!

Why the dealer couldn't do this is beyond me!

I wonder how they diagnosed a bad turbo since they obviously never looked at it. A replacement hose is PN 53013104AE and can be found on Amazon for $53.53 and free shipping Other places are a bit cheaper but added shipping costs will likely eat up the difference. If you are tight with a DCJ parts manager you can likely get it for ca. $55 at a dealer.
