Definitely getting GDE's Eco Tune soon, but am undecided on which method to use to acquire it (sending in ECU versus buying flash programmer tool). What are the advantages of purchasing the tool? What uses does it have other than installing the flash?

Thanks,

Steve

Turn around sending your ECU in for flashing is great via USPS flat rate priority mail. On the other hand if you get the flash tool - a) no down time; b) ability to reload your tune if a dealer reflashes your ECU; c) ability to store like 3 GDE tunes if so desired (ex. EcoTune for normal use and Full Torque tune for towing); d) the tool reads and clears ECU codes.

Against most recommendations, since i don't have an upgraded torque converter, I went straight for the Hot Tune. i sent my ECU in for flashing because I figured that I would never go back to the ECO tune since the hot tune provides the same MPG gains as long as you are easy on the gas. As far as I am aware the fuel mapping is the same or similar at lower throttle positions as the ECO but with the added benefit of a stronger top end.

I sent mine out on Monday morning and had it back Friday. I'm pretty sure Keith received it, flashed it, and sent it back out same day. It worked out nicely because I was traveling for work that week.

I purchased the tool as I didn't want to risk shipping the ECU internationally or the additional downtime.

Worked out well for me as the tune required tweaking to turn off the CEL caused by an FCV failure rather than dumping $$$ into a new one. If I hadn't bought the tool this further tweaking would have been a PITA requiring even more downtime, shipping costs and risk.

I also plan to switch to Bosch metal GPs when my stock of ceramics is exhausted. Again the tool will be required to apply the update.

I litterally just got back me computer today about an hour ago and just reinstalled.. I mailed mine to Keith who was amazing to deal with! I only took it around the block but can already tell it runs smoother throughout the entire rpm range. I had no prob shipping mine to him, sent it out mon and got it back today at noon

I have a generic code reader already that works on the CRD and EFI for the GMC. I didn't need or want another gadget.

I got my ECM in the mail on a Sat. GDE got it on Monday and shipped it back out the same day. It was waiting for me on Wed to reinstall (thanks so much Keith!). I actually expected to be down for a week, not 4 days. Definitely the way to go in my case.

With an electronic car, having a code reader is a must. I carry it and a laptop, with a service & parts manual inside it on trips.

When you own an unusual vehicle, it's pretty much up to you to fix it properly :)

Leaning towards getting the tool. As that particular tune is updated over time, can the tool be used to acquire the latest version?

Yes, Keith downloads to your/his tool, over the web.

Decided to buy the programmer tool. It was easy to use to access the CRD's ECU file and download it to my computer to email it to Keith at Green Diesel. I've received my tune back from Keith, but haven't loaded it in the CRD yet. About the programmer tool as regards ability to read/clear codes: can it be used on multiple vehicles for that function or is it now set up to only use on my CRD?

The tool is locked to your vehicles VIN for the purpose of the tune as the tune will only work for that specific VIN. However for the purpose of reading ECU codes, not TCM or BCM ones, it will read and clear on any compatible vehicle.
