The AC on my jeep (2003 Liberty, 3.7L, auto) is out. It blows lukewarm air at best. When I start the engine, the AC compressor sounds like a clothes dryer with a bunch of rocks in it. It makes that sound regardless of whether or not the AC is on. The sound gets slightly better after it's run for a few minutes, but doesn't completely go away. It also makes a combination electrical/rubber burn smell. Anybody have any ideas what might be going on? Thanks.

Clutch most likely going and/or the compressor itself is self destructing.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully, it will be the cheaper of the two.
