Hello I have a 2007 crd Cherokee/Liberty. The car runs fine but recently when I switch the engine off there is a muffled popping sound from under the bonnet. After a bit of poking around with the wife starting and stopping the car the sound seems to be coming from the turbo area and the noise can be felt like pulse in the pipe that runs from the turbo to the intercooler. Anyone got any ideas. Looking forward to any response. Cheers from England.

I would say (with the engine turned off) remove the intake hose from the front of the turbo and feel for any side-to-side or front-to-back play in the vanes. There should be very, very little to virtually none at all.

I would also say to check the filter to ensure it isn't clogged, there is a small sight-glass style filter on the left side of the engine compartment hooked to all sorts of fun stuff. See if the paper filter inside there is (usually dark brown) clogged or if there is any foreign material inside it.

No codes or check engine light?

Do you only feel that pulse when you shut it off, or is there a constant pulse when the engine is running?

Thanks for the replies. The pulse/muffled popping sound is only felt and heard when the engine is being switched off, ie switch off the ignition engine stops then it does it. I drove it today shut off the engine and it did not happen then the next time I stopped outside the house it did it. There is no CEL and no codes in OBD
Cheers

If you are hearing a clicking sound for about 10 seconds after the engine is off, it is most likely a stripped plastic gear in your FCV (flow control valve). Try unplugging the electrical connector for it and see if the noise stops. The FCV is in front of the intake elbow on the drivers side of the motor on US CRDs. Not sure about where it is on EU CRDs.

Thank you for the reply. There is no clicking sound ( I will check it out anyway ) earlier today I disconected the sensor on the intake from the airbox I believe that this disables the Erg/egr valve and now the noise is barely audible and the pulse in the intercooler pipe is weaker, it's still there but not as loud.

Cheers
