I just did mine. It took less than 10 minutes. I just got some 3/4" ID clear vinyl hose from Home Depot and a 3/4" PVC plug. Pulled the hose from the top of the engine and plugged it. Put the new hose on there and ran it down beside the intercooler and tie wrapped it in several places.

Then for fun I pulled off the intercooler hoses to check for oil. Oh yeah...it's there. I've got <1K miles on mine and switched to Rotella 5W-40 Synthetic at 200 miles.

Just don't freak out the first time you see the water and oil vapor coming out from under your Jeep. It can be real noticeable at night when you're stopped. It can look like smoke from a small fire. In warm weather this is the only downside I've seen.

Not much to write up. :) I'll try to remember to get a pic tomorrow. Real simple mod and should hold me until Old Navy gets his idea out there. I'll be putting a ton of miles on the CRD and didn't want to wait.

I did mine last night. I tried the 3/4 pvc plug, but it was too big. Got a 1/2" plug and it fit perfect. I ran the hose to the drivers side and tie-rapped it to the brake lines by the fender well.

Just finished mine. I went down the driver's firewall and tied to the brake lines also. Your directions made it so simple, I almost thought I'd done something wrong, but the car runs fine. I'd have looked inside the intercooler hose if I could have figured out which one it was. For now, I'll assume that with an oil change to Rotella at 500mi. and 900mi. on it now that it's as full of oil as yours. No more! :D

Stand in front of your jeep looking at the engine. Find the intercooler, looks like a radiator and is sandwitched against the radiator to the front of the Jeep. There are charged air cooling (CAC) hoses coming out of both upper corners of the intercooler. On you left (passenger side) hose loops over the top and down to the turbo. To your right a larger diameter output hose goes to the air induction casting on the motor. 5/16 nutdriver/socket wrench will get the hose clamps off. Suggest removing these hoses and cleaning so you can tell if your oil was from the CCV or your turbo has a blown oil seal (like mine at 12K).

For what it is worth folks, I wouldn't take it to the dealer with an open vent. You'll spend less time swapping it than you might arguing with the dealer. Plus, it is not legal.

Why isn't this legal?

I don't sort of understand what this mod even does... Can I get a noob/non-gearhead explanation of WHY to do this and why it's illegal? :D

It by-passes a polution device, and vents engine blow-by in to air, instead of burning it in the engine. If you have a state that checks for that stuff, then be very careful as it possibly could result in fines.

What it does is take polluting blow-by gasses and directs them into the engine where other emmissions devices can treat them. It is legally required to make emmissions. Even the Provent doesn't remove the toxic gases, just separates the oil and the gases get sucked into the motor. Disconnecting this can also void your warranty.

"Suggest removing these hoses and cleaning so you can tell if your oil was from the CCV or your turbo has a blown oil seal (like mine at 12K)."

Memory problem, don't remember your blown turbo seal. Have always over cooled down before shut down. Used 0w40 for first 18k miles. Home made ccv hoses back on since oil volume inside the hoses higher with 5w40 than 0w40 (could this be that the heavier oil doesn't escape my cheap trap as vapor?). I thought a blown seal would produce lack of power and oil out the exhaust. Can you expound on turbo seal for me? first turbo, first diesel. Thanks.

Is it possible to smell the oil/gasses being vented, or am I imagining things?
The plastic hose won't melt with the engine heat?
50 miles since the install and no oil anywhere in the hose.
I'll pull the intercooler hose as soon as the engine cools off. Thanks for the verbal map!

.......and I kind of figured I'd remove it all if I went to the dealer

Will this cause the check engine light to come on? If so, what code will it generate?

Thanks!

No, not necessarily. A bad turbo shaft seal won't effect the performance of the turbo unless the shaft itself is damaged causing the seal or turbine failure. Like having a blown axle or wheel seal, doesn't mean the axle is broken, just can't control the oil. The natural & strong vaccume of the turbocharger draws oil into the intake side.

I can tell you that simple math, oil added to the engine vs. oil collected from the Provent not close to adding up. If you could see the pictures I took and enclosed in the demand letter to my dealer, you would understand my situation clearer. Lots of oil coming through the turbo seals. My Jeep runs fine, shifts like crap, but motor is running fine.

Wasn't your CRD one of the early oil pukers I was reading about on the another forum?

No. The light won't come on.

This mod can be taken off in 2 minutes on the side of the road if needed before you go to a dealer.

Thanks for the brain help, it seems so simple now. should've done a monty python and hit my head to get my brain cell back in its' socket. Same name at edmunds and I mentioned the following here also. After purchase, followed my wife back to the house, oil all over the car I was driving. My full oil change mark is the "M" in the "Min". Suspect the dealer overfilled using the dipstick. 18k miles0w40 and oil in the hoses and intake. Cleaned the hoses and the intake. 0W40 miles and 4k miles of 5w40(without my home made ccv hoses)since the intake cleaning and oil in the intake and in the hoses. Thinking 0w40 stays vapor longer and passes thru? and 5w40 stays liquid? That's why I asked about turbo seal leakage, if I have to add oil (with my dipstick so off-how will I know), I should suspect the seal. Thanks

Rule of thumb, fill it when it gets to Add but only put in 1/2 quart. If it's like mine, full is actually @ 1/8 inch below the full line. The beauty of the open vent or a Provent (or other CCV filter) is in eliminates the CCV as the source of your oil contamination. The only source left is the turbo seals.

Was reading that stuff as far back as last July trying to decide if to buy this Jeep. Figured WTH, I can filter the CCV or just open vent it and keep the CAC clean. This diesel can't be that bad with oil. Wrong!!!! Not in my wildest dreams would I have though this turbo would blow oil like this or more troubling, DC would renig on the warranty if it did.

Glad I did this mod. I'm already seeing little spots of oil on the driveway. Better there than in my intercooler. I'm now using Mobil 1 Delvac 5W-40 (found it at a local truck stop) and made sure it isn't overfilled. Still leaking through.

If the dripping of oil becomes a problem, may want to run the vent hose into one of the holes in the unibody frame. Lets the steam & oil run down the inside of the frame chanel.
