I have recently added a fair bit of weight to the front end of the KK, +1.5" wheel spacers = slight rub on the drivers side pinch weld. It seems that my wheels are rubbing (only at full lock, wheels turned to the left) a little higher on the pinch weld than I have seen pics of? Its rubbing on the opening at the top of the pinch weld, which I've highlighted in the RED area. So far, I have flattened out the area in GREEN.

I thought I remembered reading somewhere, that there is an airbag/collision sensor in that area???

Question: Anybody know why the pinch weld "flares out" and makes that small opening? And, How high up can I pound the pinch weld? - Can I pound that opening flat?

I pounded that whole thing as flat as possible....with a 15# sledgehammer

Edit: I actually beat that whole area back 1/2 inch or so....my airbags didnt go off

Iirc the airbag inertia sensor is somewhere under the center console. It wouldn't be a bad idea to disconnect the battery though.

The airbags are not "armed" unless your driving above a certain speed and the drivers seat belt(for the drivers airbag) has to be buckled for it to be armed also.

Not true. Just disconnect the plug to the controller under the center console ATH mentioned. Reconnect it with the battery still connected and enjoy buying a new headliner, and airbags.
It is always best practice to disconnect the Neg (-) battery cable and isolate it, wait 10 minutes then start work. 2 minutes of time can save you BIG $$$!

FTI, if you pound too much on the pinch weld, you will create a bump in your floor boards.

You are right about the floor boards, but 1/2-1" you aint gonna notice that.... I have no carpet, see the pic. Mine are pounded waaay back. I had mine at 3.25-3.5 with 32.2 tires. Now im at 4" and they fit with enough room for 33".

Thanks for the info guys. Sounds as though I have been pounding the pinch weld like a fairy, and the 12lb sledge I have just needs a 2nd round of elbow grease.

That is because you sent a static charge through the wires like what sometimes happens when you connect the battery cables(small spark, happens sometimes but not always). Will not happen every single time,a very rare thing and why they want you to disconnect the battery and wait at least 30mins before working on the SRS system so the internal capacitor in the SRS module drains.
