I had similar problem. The previous owners dog destroyed the horizontal lines There are repair kits if you have only one or two small scratches in the painted on "wires". Auto parts stores carry them. Mine was bad enough I changed it out with one from the local U-pull junkyard for 60.00.

The part that goes on the window has melted off.

I hate to be difficult but "The part that goes on the window has melted off." is not very specific as the defrost grid and plug all are "on the window". I suspect the grid that covers the inside of the window has not melted off but if it has they you can likely get a junkyard replacement window with a good grid or simply scarp off the old stuff and install any of a host of after market replacement grids. If, as is more likely, the plug that attaches a power wire to the grid has melted off there are a variety of repair options on Amazon or other sites such as http://www.frostfighter.com/index.htm and possible local parts stores.

from Auto parts stores you can get copper blended super glue. Not guaranteed but worth a shot. Then just glue it to the back of the glass.

made by both permatex and locktite brands. (part #21351)
