If you are the owner of a known cracked block, a bonafide crack, could you tell me if you were running studs for some time before? or if you were still running the stocker bolts?
I added a poll today, a couple other things that might cause stress to the rear of the block but would be highly argumentative;
engine mounts shot, and the block is hammering away...
our well known 'shuddering'.. or a combination of the 2 could be a factor at cracking a weak spot in a casting.
Not sure how to add this last part in a poll.. heck I'll add em anyway! It would be such a wild guess to narrow it down to exactly that!
( wild guess on any of my questions too.. this is why the poll to 'see' any trends)

Thanks

Stock engine, with a little green diesel tune. Stock head bolts. But this started the day I got the timing belt back on and that afternoon I noticed a drip off the back of the eng.

Thanks! that is '1' for stock bolts..

This may be just a snipe hunt.. but still curious if there is a trend!

Stock bolts. GDE tune. It cracked on the back side of the block, just below the deck, down to the bellhousing.

So do you think the GDE tune cracked a water jacket casing?

Its either a casting flaw, or due to multiple hot events. I live 30 minutes from Denver and drive up a very steep grade for long periods of time every day. It is hard on every vehicle. During the summer, there will be multiple cars on the side of the road overheated. On my bone stock CRD, it will make it up doing 70mph with cruise control on without batting an eye. My GDE tuned vehicle can't maintain 70 mph, it slowly loses speed and begins to overheat if I don't take it out of overdrive and slow down. This was the same case with my room mate's CRD with an eco tune. All of my CRD's have healthy cooling systems (thermostat, water pump, Hayden heavy duty fan clutch) as well as my room mate's. I don't know wtf the deal is

That's mighty strange. If I'm not towing, and my speed is up, I do just fine. I will say this, test those fans. I had a fairly new one almost destroy my engine, and it didn't engage even when my temp was at 3/4  That's when I decided I had to go electric. I wish they made a better quality mechanical fan that engaged a little earlier. I just got TDF's stat in the mail today, and I am going to torture test my CRD on hills this summer and see if it helps with my high temps when pulling 5k lbs up some serious long grades. I'm hoping that I'll be able to cruise at 50 or so up them. They are too windy to go 75.

You're having these temp issues even in the winter? I have no problems except when it's warm outside.

I'm no diesel expert, so I wonder if the leaner Eco tune could make an engine run a bit warmer under those circumstances?

I'd definitely delete the muffler if I was you for an easy reduction in EGT's, if you already haven't.

Reload the stock tune, and try it out. I bought my CRD in Denver and it tried to overheat climbing up I-70. I thought it was a bad fan clutch, but it turned out to be a slipped timing belt.

So do you have the eco or hot tune? Actually a GDE tune makes our engines run a little cooler due to the lesser amount of fuel burned, but if you have the hot tune and are pedal to the metal, that might be a different story? You are the only one that has ever posted power loss with the tune, why not send it back if you do not like it, it has a warranty?

Even though there are not many that reported cracked blocke, all were at the rear corners. Maybe mine was a bit of an exception since as well as it being cracked at both corners the cracks were connected by it being cracked along the entire back of the block.

Before I originally posted about a possible block crack, the only other response was from GDE who only heard of a crack just above the starter area. Now it seems there are more out there.

Anyone have a good engine block for sale??

Just another thought, could this years exceptionally cold weather have anything to do with this "outbreak" of cracked blocks?

Mine was " garage kept". Even though it was an unheated garage and coolant protection was at -34 degrees, I don't feel the cold would have anything to do with my cracked head.

Diesellady is in southern California so the cold winter was not an issue there. Hers appears to be identical to my cracked head.
