Yesterday I got a check engine light. After the CEL came on, I had to get gas and noticed that the fuel cap was loose.

The code was P0455 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (gross leak), so almost certainly the problem was the loose cap.

I have a Scangauge, but I only bought it a few months ago and am not really familiar with it. I tried to clear the code several times, but get a "No Response".

Is there something special I should do? Should I disconnect the battery?

It's due for regular maintenance in 600 miles. If I can't reset it I'll just wait until then.

I think there's some chance someone siphoned gas from the tank as I had to refill earlier than expected. But that's beside the point.

Should be pretty easy. Connect the scan gauge to the OBDII port, turn the ignition switch to the "on" position (don't start it). You should have a "read" button on the scan gauge which you would push and it should read the codes. You should also have a "delete" button or function and once the codes are read, you should be able to delete them.

If you cannot clear it and if it was just the fuel cap there is a pretty good chance it will clear on its own after like 5 drive cycles.

OK, thanks for the help! I wasn't able to delete it. I'll see if it clears itself after a while.

Try viewing and clearing the codes while the engine is running. I think the rpm's need to be > 0 (engine running) for the scangauge to talk to the computer.

I'm pretty sure the engine was running when I tried to clear the codes. In any case, I tried it again a few times with the engine running. The code still won't clear and I get the "No Response" message.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Isn't there a "force clear" option somewhere I remember seeing on the ScanGauge?

Papaindigo was right. The code did eventually reset after some number of drive cycles. The Check Engine Light is gone!
