Sorry if this has been discussed already; I searched but couldn't find a discussion.

I'm going to pull the trigger on a used CRD this weekend. I'm lookin @ an 05 Limited w/ 10K miles, loaded to the gills for $19.2K, and an 06 Limited w/ 8K miles, loaded to the gills for $23.5K. Neither has had much time in the shop. The 05 has had the trans flashed and a new instrument cluster; the 06 has had no problems yet.

I know the 06 includes the Electronic Stability Program. Aside from that, is there any other draw to the 06 that would justify $4K?

Thanks for your thoughts!

A Jeep representative told me personally that there were NO changes between the 2005 and 2006 Jeep Liberty CRDs. I put 23,500 miles on my CRD with no major problems whatsoever. Personally I think the '05s are just fine. You need to work the diesel good and hard from time to time though, that's what they are made for and they don't like being babied.

I don't know where you are located, but maybe you could track someone down who is a Chrysler employee/retiree. I asked around at work and was able to get the EmployeeChoice number of the father of a lady I work with. Apparently, they get a renewed number/discount every year or six months (or something like that). I recently bought my new '05 (leftover) for more than $7k under sticker. One of the reasons I decided to go for the Jeep is because I was upside-down in an '06 Honda that I couldn't stand.

Try to find someone who has an employee discount and maybe you could get into a new Jeep instead of a used one for about the same price. I'm in the Midwest, though, and there are many Chrysler employees around. Maybe there are none near you.

Good luck.

Personally I'd spring for the '06 partly because Chrysler has had a bit more time to work out the bugs. It depends on your tolerance level, I guess. They'll get things right eventually or you'll figure out how to compensate. I just don't handle the aggravation factor very well. The other thing I wonder about is the new instrument cluster. It sounds like it might have been more than a bad part. I'm not a mechanic, but it smacks of electircal/wiring problems. If you read much of this forum, most of the problems discussed are from '05 owners.

If you want a CRD, I suggest you buy new regardless if it's an '05 or '06. In most states, Lemon law protection only covers you on new vehicles and within the first 12 months after purchase. That way if some of these '05 bugs start showing up in 06's after some miles are accumulated you will have some consumer protection beyond the warranty.

Good point. But the 05 has a 7/70 warranty... and is $4K cheaper!

A couple of items: I live in CA, so new is out of the question. I need to buy used w/ at least 7.5K miles. Also, somebody was questioning the instrument cluster repair. Normally I would be suspicious as well, but I have an 05 Caravan that had the cluster replaced because of a flaky odometer digit. No biggie.

This is all good stuff. I think I'm leaning a bit towards the 05.

Thanks!

The thing about the 7/70 warranty is what I was gonna say, that would be the only reason I would choose the 05 over the 06. Other than that you most likely won't be dissapointed either way, I'd save a few bucks as well as getting a longer warranty... go with the 2005

I am in California, and faced a similar choice. I went with the 05 and have not had one moment's regret.
