On a cold start, I get the needle of the gauge at 100psi. But the sensor is rated for 80psi, so I'd guess it must read over 80psi and sends signal to the gauge that's making it show 100. I think it's normal to read that much but only till engine warms up so oil temps are warmer and the pressure drops to the interval known by the sensor. It takes about a minute to get to 80-ish psi when outside temps are about 45-ish. In the winter, below 10F it may take 2+ minutes to see the gauge showing under 80psi. Regarding your oil, I'd use that 5w30 even in Florida or Arizona , thinner oil at cold is always better than thicker. Plus, I see the difference between your oil and mine at 180 are very minimal in pressure... I do like so far the results you posted, I'll jump on Amazon to get a diesel 30 weight oil. Can you please let me know what exact brand and name of oil you use?

Not sure about remapping the ecu in your case, do you have a known tune like gde?

I have been buying a supermarket brand of 5w-30 oil because it has the same ratings as the leading brands but much cheaper at £4.50 per litre. Castrol Edge 5w-30 or Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 are 2 popular brands. I have been looking into reasons why manufactures are using 5W-30 and it seems to be more due to modern diesels are fitted with particle filters and 5w-30 seems to have the ability to be able to cling engine exhaust deposits to help prevent particle filters from blocking.

I thought I would post my views on high oil pressure when the oil is cold. On first start in the morning my oil pressure is around 100 psi, now my concern is the oil pressure realise is probably set around 70 to 80 psi and sending most of the oil directly back to the oil pan. It can take several minutes for the oil pressure to drop below the pressure realise setting. So my concern is lubrication during the first few minutes? Since rebuilding my motor and installing an oil pressure gauge I am allowing the oil pressure to drop before increasing the RPM much above 1000 RPM. I know most are fitted with auto trans and that makes this difficult due to not much torque to the wheels below 2000 RPM. geordi mentioned he had a con rod problem for no known reason and beginning to think this could be an issue. Any thought's on this subject?

If you can pull the specs for the oil you use would be great, to compare them with our oils. I'll research Mobil 1 esp meantime.

Regarding oil pressure, I've noticed that it drops pretty quick to 80 psi when idling, I'd guess our sensors don't know to read over 80psi and once the oil warms up a bit and falls within the range known by the sensor, the readings are accurate. I usually wait till oil pressure drops to 60psi before leaving. I seriously doubt there is a severe lubrication issue, side the common engine wear at cold. Wear on an engine at idle without load is minimal. But if you wait for the oil to warm up a bit, till let's say 60-ish psi, then take it easy till it gets over 140F, I am convinced you'll do the engine good. Regarding filtration, with a good oil I'm not concerned it bypasses the filter for few minutes till it warms up. I'm more concerned with condensation and contemplating getting an oil warmer so I can heat it up to 220-240 so the water evaporates, but again, where do the vapors go? This is a bit of overthinking I guess, lol.

My oil spec as written on the can 5w-30 meets or exceeds API SN/CF, ACEA C3, BMW LL-04, MB229.31/229.51,GM DEXOS 2.

Do you know at what oil pressure the idiot light comes on? I have 137,400 on my CRD and the oil light comes on at hot idle, but I'm becoming alarmed because it's staying on even at 1400-1500 rpm now. It's come on at idle for maybe 30,000 miles now but normally only toward the end of an oil cycle, when I changed oil the oil light would go out for a while. Running Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W40 and M1-301 filter.

After reading this thread I'm thinking that putting in a new oil pump would be a good first step.

Nyet. The sensor is bad. On the CRD, the sensor is a dumb on/off style, and tells you NOTHING about the condition of the engine or the pump. Actually, it is the perfect detector of when your engine is critically damaged.

If your engine has just stopped on its own while making unhappy noises, and the light came on at the end... Then it is informing you that you need an oil change. Or that your engine is completely out of oil and destroyed, I know it is one of those things.

Buy a new sensor, enjoy the oil bath (Thank the maker!) and drive on.

That sounds promising! Where is the sensor, easy to get at? I kind of feel silly that I didn't think of that, it's a obvious step.

Well I know there's oil in it, I dropped almost 7 quarts in today! And it runs perfectly, I've really been pleased with the life I'm getting out of it, bought it with 88,000 miles and now my son is driving it.

Look at the oil filter and you will see the sensor just ahead of it. Can't miss it.

You bought it with 88k miles.... Have you done the timing belt? If it is an early build 06 model, that could be rapidly approaching a 10 year old belt and that is a LOOOOOOOOONG time to have a belt in service.

Check my signature if you need help - I've worked on over 40 of these now, and may be coming to the NE again soon. Next up is Canada this week, but that trip is flying.

Minimum oil pressure @ idle is 10 psi and as far as I can remember the light will come on at 7 psi. Yes try replacing the sensor first or connect a pressure gauge temporarily instead of the oil pressure sensor to get a true reading. My guess would be a worn engine and yes replacing the oil pump may increase oil pressure. (oil pump before oil filter?)
