I found this researching why a plain pulley shouldn't be used for a friend who just bought a '06 diesel libby. Put in a my homade inline thermostat fix in with him just last Sunday. He went from 135-140deg to 188-195 with the thermostat. Guage reads just left of straight up now too.

Chirping from the belt is the alternator clutched pulley. If you don't replace the pulley, the failure will eventually cause the failure of the serpentine tensioner.

Replace your alternator pulley and serpentine belt (while it's off). If the serpentine belt comes off or partially comes off it can cause the engine to jump time maybe not everytime, I'm not sure how, but it has happened a few times acording to this forum. It's crazy I'm potentially dealing with that problem now. :banghead:

I thought I'd tag on here since I've been having the chirping for a few weeks and just had a chance to fix it. Having had the CRD for 9 years now, this isn't my first OAD to fail, but it is the first I replaced myself without a new alternator attached to it. I happened to have bought a replacement litens unit last year when my tensioner was going out and didn't use it until tonight. The following tools make the job trivial:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AGWEUKI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014WDKQ4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The tensioner wrench is something that's universal and good to have anyway and although any long socket will work, that one's really slim and fits down there really well (also fits my wife's A4 well).

As for the lisle kit, it fits MANY different decouplers and at amazon prices, is a steal for how easy it makes things.

To test the decoupler (OAD), stick the tool that goes in the center in and try to turn the alternator with the belt in place with a 11mm wrench on the spindle. If it freewheels in one direction and has a "stretchy resistance" in the other it's good. If it is free in both directions or doesn't spin at all, then its shot. To remove, you can untension/slip the belt off and just rest it in position looped over a screwdriver between the alternator and timing belt cover and your fan shroud. A 19mm (or 3/4") wrench to turn the "shell" part of the tool and the aforementioned 11mm wrench is all you need if you have the took kit. Removal and installation of each take about 5 minutes or less once everything is in place. You MAY have to slide your AC lines out of the way to get room for the tools.

All things said and after cleanup and writing this post less than 1 hour of work.

Dan
