I lost the only transponder key to my '05 Liberty....I talked to the dealership nearest to my work...They said that the key blank with the transponder chip was on back order.... I'm going to call around to several other dealerships in the area and hope like h3ll they might have one in stock....How screwed might I be? I'd hate to think that my Liberty that I've spent so much time, blood, sweat, and tears (not to mention money) on is going to be undriveable for quite some time.....I see keys with transponder chips all over the 'net for sale.....BUT...the dealership had to have my VIN to even be able to look up the key blank that I would need.....ANY help would be greatly appreciated...

I've used one of the transponder blanks from ebay before and the dealer cut it and programed it with no issues. Without any key though, might be a different situation. I'm sure that a dealership somewhere around your state would have a blank or two. I know the dealer charges about $125 for each key with programing.

Like stated, order a blank off eBay and let the dealer program it, or call your local locksmith company, they should be able to provide you with a blank or at least tell you where to get one...
Best of luck!!!

Are you talking about the simple "chipped" key or the fancy remote door lock/unlock key? I cannot speak for the later but with respect to the former you need to be very careful ordering off eBay as the 05 and 06 "chipped" key blanks are NOT the same; been there done that.

Your quickest fix is your local locksmith shop; not a big box place but a real locksmith. They will likely have the proper key blank in stock and if not if you get the right blank they can program it.

I lost one of the fancy remote keys to my 06. got one off ebay and had a local locksmith cut and program it. you can program your own key if you have 2 keys that are programed present, how to do that is in the owners manual. It then says with out 2 keys you have to go to the dealer to add a key..
I was down to one key and had the locksmith do it. was cheaper than the dealer. they have a machine that plugs in to the OBDII port to program it. expect to be able to show the locksmith your ID and proof of ownership for them to work on it.

So look on line or in the Yellow pages for a good local locksmith really its likely your quickest and maybe cheapest option, some even have mobile service so you wouldn't need to tow it in.

I have been lucky enough to find a dealership that does have a transponder (chipped) key in stock....Their service dept. is only open M-F...., which doesn't work with my job schedule...They called another dealership who's service dept. is open on Sat. , but they don't have one in stock...They found another at a dealership that is a little closer to where my Jeep is currently sitting....but I don't know if it's "just" a chipped key, or a fancy one with the remote....I'd definitely settle for "just" a chipped key for now..., and swallow the expense for a remote fob key in the near future....I know I'd really miss the convenience of the remote fob...LOL...My other Jeep is a '75 Wagoneer...AMC era....Oh those are so much simpler... ...I may call a couple of locksmiths local to where my Jeep is tomorrow and see about availability of keys / pricing before I commit to towing my Jeep the forty something miles from where it's at, to the dealership...Thanks for the replies y'all.

Well, The dealership that originally told me they did have a chipped key blank, doesn't, but I found a lock smith who has chipped key blanks, and can come to my work place.....Only $200.....beats the $170 quoted by the dealership, if they could even get a chipped key blank, plus the tow to the dealership, another $100...

2 local reputable locksmith companies both told me that they have problems programming specifically Jeep chipped ignition keys.

Last summer, when I got the '06 with just one fancy chipped/remote-door-unlock ignition key, I tried each of them for spares.
Each of them burned up 2 chipped/remote-door-unlock ignition keys which would remote unlock the doors, but wouldn't start the tractor.

I have little faith that I'll ever get a 2nd ignition key.
But I do have a spare manual door key for the time I eventually lock the key inside.

When I end up losing the ignition key, I'm screwed.

Well, I found a locksmith who did have, and successfully programmed a chipped key blank for my Liberty....$200....not the "fancy" remote key, but hey, I can drive my Jeep again...He gave me the PIN code, plus the 4 digit key code (?) and told me that if I find a remote fob key he can program that for $90....he did tell me to stay away from remanned key fobs....The Liberty's computer doesn't "like it" when you try to program a remanned key fob....I think I'll be on the lookout for a new remote fob, and then keep the chipped key in my wallet as a spare, just in case....like I should have bought three years ago when I lost one of two key fobs that I had....
