It turns out that there is approx a .600" difference between the axle centreline/face of diff between the lp and dana 30a, also the pumpkins are not the same diameter. The dana30a is slightly larger. Meaning you can't put a lp cover on a dana30a.. It's too small. However the carriers and bearings are swappable.

Here's a pic of the lexan overlay thus far.

I have begun designing the axle tube bits in cad for mass production upon release.

Again, I apologize for the slow r and d progress, this isn't my full time gig.

I appreciate the time and effort you are putting in to this. Looking forward to getting one of these once they are available. It will be worth the wait it for these kits.

I know right?

During the digging process with this carcass it occurred to me, that it is very possible to create a dana 44 front in very much the same manner. A custom intermediate shaft would be needed and a dodge dakota style mini stub for the drivers side. Meaning one could theoretically use two passenger side cv axles and interchange them left and right. Meaning you would only need to carry a single spare. But this d44 however plausible is seriously off topic. If somebody wants to try it, I will happily provide free guidance and support.

The drawings are complete for the passenger side cone. I still need to draw the drivers side "axle tube insert" which should only take an hour to do so.

The problem is funding. I'm taking custom orders on the side to fund r and d (mostly machine work). Physically I haven't sold anything yet, but orders are in a products are almost ready to be shipped.

I can stress enough how you guys are instrumental in providing feedback and support. LOSTJEEPS. Really is a happening place.

Today I dropped the raw materials off at a local machine shop. Really nice guy.

The prototype axle ends should be ready by tomorrow.

Here is a sample of the drawing for the axle ends.

Image

While I am waiting for the machine shop, tonight I decided to start creating a dxf for the cover plate wing assembly. I have something special in store for you guys with regards to how that's going to work. Quick side note, the two diff's are not the same size. There are small variations in the dimensions of the diff housings. This will still work tho.

Sample:

We're getting there.

Is that the Little Dipper or the Big Dipper?

That one? It's the Big Dipper. It's the d30a, slightly larger than the d30. When I get the lp30 spec'd out I'll make the dxf file available for anyone who wants to try and build their own diff cover for a lp30.

Why not? If the drawings already there than why not?

Not sure if the dxf fits yet, waiting on the test cut, but here's the Little Dipper.

OK, I was interested at "steel front diff"...then you start talking Dana 44 with left and right interchangeable axles....yeah man!! keep building brother !!! :D I seem to spend more time wrenchin' on my Liberty than driving it...not out of necessity, but mainly, 'cause I like to do it.....There's always room for improvement...

I talked it over with the shop that makes custom shafts and he said it was absolutely possible. All I need to provide is dimensions. We could even use a kj cv.. It's just speculation at this point.. And the $$$... Not even going there.

Too much legal to deal with right now lol.

Looking at my spare axle collection made me wonder....

What about a Dodge 8.25" or a hp Dana 30? Both go to 4.88 ratios. The hp30's pinion offset would yield stock CV and driveshaft angles at 2-1/4" lift. Just thinkin out loud... I'll shut up now :SOMBRERO:

Your front drive shaft angles dosent change in a IFS KJ/KK with a lift.

Agreed. My point is you wouldn't be sacrificing one for the other.

You have a spare axle collection and your not helping me!?!? Lol.. Just kidding. Do you mean the ifs 8.25 or c205mm (or whatever?)

You very well could chop up a jk d30 and place it under a kk. For the record. An xj d30 may work under the same application too!

Thinking about it... If I was to use a hp30, I may be able to drop just the diff. But that would be a disaster waiting to happen.

My front driveshaft angle changes slightly under load and it makes hella noise too... But that's because my bushings are toast.

My collection includes a couple of XJ housings (a disconnect, and non-disco), and an '88 8.25" from a dodge half ton (27 spline). Never really got past the idea stage though. This is the thread that got me thinking...

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/hummer/9 ... build.html

It does seem like a lot of goofin' around to still have IFS. A solid axle swap would be easier for me to ghetto fab into place. I'm sitting on a bunch of Dodge and Ford D44 stuff also, so no shortage of SAS options.

You are absolutely right!

A sfa would be way easier in the way of fab. The general idea was to create a low cost high value solution, using a JY lp30 with the same gear ratio as the KJ.

I guess I wondered if the LP D30 is an ideal starting point... 8.25" front and rear has some sense to it.
