I still like my KJ lot and plan to keep it for a good long while yet (3--5 years). I don't think I'll keep it going
forever though. I like the size, the weight, the IFS, the power/weight and torque/weight ratios, the styling, the ability to carry 4 people comfortably on occasion, the cargo room with the rear seat down. Here's my list of alternatives of mostly new and a few late model used vehicles.
- KJ Liberty: Great vehicle, but I can't see keeping it going forever (= 20 more years).
- KK Liberty: Great but as I understand it weighs 200 lbs more.
- KL Cherokee: Possibility as a daily driver and for long trips. Probably not for me, but maybe
a replacement for wife's Subaru Outback. - 4Runner: Heavy and a little big. Would be great for trips, not sure it would be as good a DD.
- FJ Cruiser: Better size, but I wouldn't put a dog in the back seat.
- Tacoma: Weight and size better. Definite contender.
- Chevy Colorado, gas or diesel. Very interesting, remains to be seen how much quality aftermarket support will materialize.
- Grand Cherokee WK2 gas. Heavy, V6 seems too small for weight. V8s are thirsty. Not wild about independent rear suspension.
- Grand Cherokee WK2 diesel. Expensive, and still heavy. Dealer incentives get the price down to something I could consider.
- Wrangler JK Unlimited. Definite possibility, but I would prefer IFS for a daily driver and I already have a Wrangler LJ.
- Wrangler JL Unlimited several years from now. Definite possibility. Again would prefer IFS for daily driver, but oh well.
What I'd really like to do is keep the KJ and buy something else as well. But I don't have room for more than 3 vehicles and I want to keep the LJ.
