Do I need a hitch extension to hook up a uhaul trailer? I have the mopar hitch and flipped my tire carrier around. Will I be able to hook a trailer up to it regularly, or do I need the extension? If so, how long is suggested?

no extension needed, but opening the back door to get some trailers hooked up is a serious pain. An extension would make towing less stable, but if it's light and the weight is distributed right, then it won't make much difference.

We pulled a fully loaded standard 5 X 8 U-Haul from Tempe, AZ to Tally, FL and from Tally to Kearney, NE (2 separate in time trips) behind my son's 06 with a flipped spare tire mount and a standard length receiver with zero problems including unhooking the trailer in Kearney so we could apartment hunt. No need to open the back door to hook up; I don't think you could open it much hooked up but then you can get in thru the window not that we could have removed anything the way the CRD was packed.

I've been using a 2-3" extension, not for any good reason but it's what I had before figuring out the spare tire flip option, with about 2,500lbs of boat with no noticeable problems.

You should be ok with stock length and I would not go much longer as it messes with tongue weight/balance and towing geometry in ways I do not pretend to understand or want to "enjoy"
