While in MI for the big GTG one of the guys installed a EGT sending unit on his CRD and during the process I checked his front diff drain plug for for size and the allen wrench turned the plug with just me trying to get the allen wrench in the hole. Today I went to do the gear oil change in front on our CRD and found my plug was only finger tight also, was not real happy. When I removed the plug I discovered it had an O ring seal of all things, means you don't crank it down like pipe threads with thread sealer.

Doesn't this look a little delicate for a drain plug seal? I didn't put that in very tight, was concerned about tearing the o-ring.

Where did the guy install his EGT sensor?

Tearing the O ring is the problem as is crushing the O ring. Doesn't seem to be the thing to do without something like locktite to hold in place.

I was going that route, just couldn't find the Locktite bottle. Owners of the bus garage where I serviced mine aren't big fans of locktite. I kept a bottle hidden when I worked there full time. I think they found my secret stash, wasn't there when I went hunting.

What did you refill the front diff with? I've been contemplating synthetic up front, but have not looked into different brands or weights yet. I'm at 11.5k miles so I'm close for the first change out...

I used 75W90 Synthetic in both diffs. You will want to drop the T-case fluid while you are at it, use ATF+4 in the t-case.

Do both diffs have drain plugs? Easy to get to?

No, that would make too much sense. Have to pull the rear cover and re-glue. I installed an aftermarket rear cover with a drain plug. Front is drainable but have to pull the front skid/shield to access the diff.

I had planned on using the PML cover and when I went to install the new cover it would not clear the carrier clips on the differential. They are being shipped back to PNL for examanation and new ones sent back for fit testing. I was going to take pictures of the finned version on the truck and the one with fins milled down. The finned one will probably have about 1/2" clearance if you have a fuel skid plate and about 1" with them milled down. I will post pictures when they get the new ones sent back to me and I do a reinstall.

I used Mobil 1 synthetic 75w-90 for both differentials.

Replaced my front differential lube yesterday for the completely lame 12,500 mile recommended change interval. The factory lube came out slightly discolored, but now where near close to needing a lube change. I have no idea why the short change interval unless they are trying to find a way not to warranty a broken aluminim front diff from off roading.

This front diff lube should not need changed for 60k miles.

My o-ring was crushed and torn from the factory, I just re-used it and put it in a little tighter than it was originally installed.

Was I smelling this right, had dino in the front and synthetic in the rear? I put synthetic back in both. Don't believe the short service intervals on these axles. I asked at the dealer for the same service on my Chevy pick-up @ just over 100K, told me to not waste my money.

Had synthetic up front and was clean. Had dirty contaminated non synthetic in rear corporate dif (have ltd slip and factory towing so the factory fill was wrong). Now have 75-140 mopar synthetic in both with two bottles of mopar ltd slip additive in the rear.

Who's aftermarket rear dif cover with a built in drain plug is anyone using?

I changed them to make sure all lubrication was synthetic, for cold weather and better mileage, less wear etc.
The change interval I keep an eye on, but usually goes way past the recommended.

I used the PML cover. Don't forget changing the t-case fluid, was in far worse shape than the diffs @ 12,500 miles.

I haven't checked as yet, but the transfer case is it the same ATF4 fluid as the tranny? Is Mobbil 1 synthetic trans fluid ok to to use?

Yes, and yes. Isn't it odd, all this recommended change interval stuff. The recommended change interval for the transmission and (I think) transfer case are 62,500 miles for schedule B, or never for schedule A.
