I have an 03 KJ Sport.

When I turn the steering wheel a little bit in any direction, I hear a clicking noise. I too it apart and could not find it.
I had brought it to the STEALER, and they could not find anything and said to me that it is commom in this model. Put what I really heard was We cant find S@*T in your steering wheel. lol

any one else have this issue?

Did you happen to check the connection of your steering wheel to the column, our 2001 PT Cruiser has/had that same issue and it ended up being some sort of connection between the 2 that was going bad. The STEALER never really explained it to us all that well...it did go away though.

in your post you did not say wether you checked the fluid? I am just tyring obvious things here. Mine was low even when the dealership "Claims" to check all fluids and top them off when i get my oil changed, yeah right. Im not doing that again.

SD,

I did all of the common check arounds and that was the first thing I looked at.
I allso checked the connection links and every thing checks out just fine.

It has been doing it for a long time now and untill last weekend when I installed my factory fogs and relay cluster for the lights, I was looking into the clicking noise again.

My 04 KJ does not have this problem.

I don't know what the deal is. It does not bother anything else and the steering seems fine.

maybe something to check for would be a "rubbing" of a component in the steering column that moves when you turn the wheel hitting another (maybe a plastic piece hitting another) causing that particular clicking noise??

I would say its the clock spring. Take it off then turn the wheel and see what happens.

I had a clicking sound in steering columnof a 2003 limited. It turned out to be a broken steering column. It was fixed under warranty.

I had to have my steering column replaced when my Liberty was stolen and then recovered. I don't remember having this clicking with the original column, but the replacement column clicks. The dealer stated that they don't know why it makes that clicking noise.

It seems that the dealer does not know.
I actually brought mine in to have them try to find the problem and all they can say, there is nothing wrong with it.

Well I will deal with it. It really is not anything that is anoying because you really can not hear it. But I know it's there.

So I have the clicking in the steering column. How hard is it to replace the column? How much of a priority is it? Immediate fix or can I hold off?

Check that the clock spring plastic housing is not shifting a bit left and right in its housing...I had to put small rubber bumpers on each side of the housing to stop it moving.

Otherwise disconnect the universal joint at the bottom of the steering column inside the engine bay and see if the click is still there when you swing the steering wheel about....maybe it is the Multifunction Switch that has the turn stalks...lift this switch off while turning the steering wheel.

I had to replace the small bearing at the top of the steering shaft as it was seizing...Dealers do not carry this part or the larger bearing at the base of the steering column but want to charge an exhorbitant amount for the complete steering assembly.

I took apart the assembly and replaced the small bearing with a bearing from a bearing supplier for about $3.50.
