Funny how you all got your panty's in a bunch over this.Gas engines went through the same thing 40 years ago,it was going to happen with small diesel's becoming more mainstream.Your engines actually produce more harmful gasses then a gas engine did 19 years ago.

Oil mafia at works... Everything pollutes, more or less. Idea is to cut the crap and come together and releasing clean engines that are reliable and efficient. There is technology for this, but swept under the rug because of this politically controlled corporate mafia. When Nicola Tesla wanted to give free energy to everyone, he was found dead and all his work for the project was not to be ever found...

Depends on the diesel you use. I use ASTM approved biodiesel (read: not veggie oil, and is converted) in spring/summer/fall. No black smoke ever.

You should do some more research before posting false information. Gas and diesel must meet the same emission requirements in the Tier 2 standards as of like 2005. You can look into which BIN the vehicle is certified to, say BIN 10, BIN 5, BIN 2, etc. The emission standards of 19 years ago are like factors of 10 higher than today. Thanks for playing rookie.

The only unregulated emission in the EPA testing is CO2 and diesel is about 20-40% lower than a gasoline engine here when comparing the same vehicle with two different power plants.

CO2 is not harmful,CO and NOX are the bad ones.

Oh great. Another climate change denier. I guess 97% of scientists just isn't enough for some people. Unsubscribing from topic. No interest in trying to make trolls smart; waste of my time.

It isn't as much about being a climate change denier as it is about what pollutants are actually harmful.
It seems that all the worldwide organizations that have put themselves in charge of fixing this global warming trend have determined that CO2 is a major problem. Yet when it comes to vehicle emissions the focus seems to be about NOx.
So which is worse, CO2 or NOx?

Yes, NOx is bad and contributes to smog which is bad for the lungs.
But it can only do that in the presence of volatile organic compunds (unburned fuel).
And there is some evidence that NOx, in the long term, can lead to global cooling.

1st, I feel VW should have went with a SCR/Urea treatment on these vehicles instead of cheating there way. I doubt we would be here if they did. Maybe there would have been a cheat to limit the EGR when not being tested, but the Urea and SCR should have made things looked alot better with the NOx levels.

I think some people have DEF and DPF mixed up. When the DPF is regenerating, there is no DEF being pumped into the exhaust. When my EcoD regenerates, there is no smoke. I don't know about smell, because it always regens on the hiway.

So dumb question here. How about our stock CRDs? I live in a state without any mandated testing, but if this blows up and they begin to test all passenger diesels, would we pass the test?

... And when I say stock I mean certain people with a certain tune from a certain company I happen to like who reprogrammed a certain ECU. Do these people have higher NOx gasses?

I'm wondering if it would be wise to invest in a portable controller to switch the software back and forth before any mandated testing.

Yes, we have higher NOx levels.

Yes, but are the higher NOx levels still in line with 2005-2006 EPA standards?
And which testing centers actually test for NOx? Most only test for soot.

I guess I'll just keep my ears open. Most people don't even know that Jeep made diesels so the EPA may not remember either.

Any enhanced testing will not be aimed at us - the vehicle standards for the 2005-2006 CRD are much less stringent than the 2008 standards that affect these VW / BMW / Merc diesels.

The reality is most likely that the testing centers will be looking for a sticker on the engine from VW that signifies that they have been de-tuned by VW to meet these ridiculous NOx standards. Nothing should change at all for the CRD, other than possibly being swept up in the decline of values because of the loss of consumer confidence in small diesels.

Thanks a lot VW, screwing diesels just like GM did in the 70s with the Oldsmobile conversion. :banghead:

It would be one hell of a longshot, but VW could engineer an add-on DEF system, which would maintain or even improve the power and mileage while cleaning up emissions. I have never understood the hatred for DEF, other than the nuisance of having to maintain another fluid level. It works fantastic. The engine people can design strictly for power and efficiency and then the after-treatment people have to worry about making the DEF system work and clean up the emissions. We have this system in 20 or so tractors and it works without a hiccup, the tractors are amazingly efficient, and there is nothing but clean air coming out of the stack. Not even an odor. VW, Deere, and Navistar all screwed up big time by putting off DEF adaption as long as they did. I would NEVER purchase a diesel with EGR, ever (at least not one that couldn't be disabled or removed). That system is worse than the old 80's vehicles that had all the emissions garbage on vacuum operated carburetors. An absolute nightmare of a design that does nothing but destroy engines.

Probably true although careful what you wish for.....my Touareg is not part of the recall because it has SCR, but VW has had way too many issues with the DEF heater failures and plugged nozzles.
