Original poster here. The bucking and knocking was pretty bad but I thought it might smooth out when the air worked out of the fuel system so I let it run. 2 min and then it got really quiet! Long story short- The engine sheared all 8 flex plate bolts right off and the flex plate will spin with 1 finger- NOT connected to the crank.

I have the engine out of the jeep again and everything seems just fine except I can't figure why the bolts would shear off! I hate this jeep.

63K miles on a 2005 Sport CRD.
New timing belt, water pump, thermostat
New head gasket
all new rockers
new head bolts
new serpentine belt
new Stage 1&2 Weeks EGR delete kit installed
New "euro" torque converter
GDE eco tune
Brand new tires - 200 miles on them
New PA inspection

MAKE AN OFFER!

Lack of Loctite = bolts backout = bolts shear off would be my guess

I wager you have transmission problems as a root cause. What's the last thing you worked on, transmission torque converter, right?

Could your new Euro torque converter not have been installed/seated into the pump fully? Did you have to use the bell housing bolts to "suck the transmission up to the engine"?

Could be TC seating problems... I had to work my 06 around quite a bit to get the new euro TC to seat correctly. Its still weird to think that all of those bolts would back out/ break off. They are 8 pretty beefy torx bolts on the 06

Found a modified wrench in between the starter solenoid and motor as well that has probably been there for the 50k miles that I have owned it. I know I didn't loose any wrenches....

Thanks for the offer. Ill have to say no for now. check back in a week.

Also, yes, the Euro torque converter was the last thing I installed. seemed to start right up though, if it was locking up, I got to think it would stall the engine before braking the bolts. Having trouble with my local dealer and finding the new bolts. Anyone have a source for new bolts? Thanks for all the help.

As to "special" engine??? Your right about that. I have worked on cars all my life. Diesels for the last 5-6 years and never had problems like this.

You can mark me down as "not a fan"

Sorry for my $50.00 lowball offer. I've got two '05s to work on so I'm already having enough CRD happiness. They are fun when they're working.

I haven't read every post on the forum but you and "beenji" seem to be the only ones to experience broken flexplate bolts. I wish you both luck on finding the cause and solution.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but what is-
"weeks elbow kit"? I just put a new engine in my CRD and curious what this might be and what it does? Thanks

Ken

Can you rotate the engine? I'm with Rankom, worried about the crank. What a horror story. I really hope this turns out to be a lot better than it looks.

GOOD NEWS all! Original poster here. I FINALLY got the truck all back together. I bought 8 new bolts from the dealer- by the way- I did not torque them correctly when I did the rear main seal the first time. (weird torque directions- 37 ft. lbs. then loosen and torque to 19 ft. lbs. THEN tighten an additional 60 degrees) Anyway, All 8 were shorn off. I replaced them and put the engine back in AGAIN. Started right up and ran well. I am so excited!

Just hope the thing keeps going for awhile. Im tired of working on it. Thanks to all here with the advise and encouragement.

Does that mean that the flex plate bolts are torque-to-yield and therefore not reusable?

Most likely... I hate those things. I'd be torquing grade 8 bolts to 50lb-ft with locktite and calling it done.

Don't take this as a set of instructions - it is just what I would do, on my own engine. I despise TTY bolts.

Does ARP make bolts to fit? Will torque converter bolts for a hemi fit? Will ARP 147-7301 work?
