First the CRD runs ok, starts on second or third crank. But prime pump will not pump up or pump thru the bleeder. Anybody had that thing apart or do I need to?

I replaced our CRD's fuel filter head at about 50k miles with a 2nd Gen filter head because of air intrusion. After about 25k miles on the 2nd Gen filter head, the priming pump stopped working. I removed the heater puck from the 2nd Gen head and installed it on my original fuel head. I having been running that combination for about 15k miles. The next time I replace the fuel filter, I am replacing the complete assembly with a Racor unit.

Hands down the best legal "mod" you can do is the in-tank lift pump. The car was (mostly) wired and programmed from the factory for a reason. I imagine the only reason it was cut was to help meet a price-point.

X2 on the absolute best mod, it was a very stupid decision not to install one at the factory!!!
The additional costs are minimual as opposed to the benefits gained...

I have had a online pimp on my work bench for months. With that pump installed, who cares if the priming pump has a problem.

The fuel head primer pump likely is associated with a one-way valve - push down and fuel is pulled into the filter head; release and that fuel stays in the filter head. To bleed - pump primer several (5-10) times or until it gets hard, crack bleeder screw (best to use a bit of clear vinyl tube and a catch can so you can see any air and catch the fuel), when flow stops close bleeder screw (gently as that's a steel screw in an aluminum housing), repeat. Do not pump while bleeder is open.

If no fuel comes out of bleeder after pumping then I suspect the primer one-way valve is bad. If that's the case and the vehicle runs/cranks ok you can ignore the problem until/if you reach the point where has to be bleed out of the filter head at which point you need a new filter head. Alternatively an in tank or in line fuel pump.

Tks
Appreciate the reply. Methinks the lift pump is the next project. Kinda overdue.
