Hey everybody I really hate to come on here and make my first post about a problem. I am Joe by the way. My wife has a 2005 CRD with 152000 miles on it. The little Jeep has been bullet proof since we bought it over a year ago. I noticed a couple of months back that the Jeep sometimes wouldn't start and just spin like crazy but no fire. I did have to put a starter on it and the problem seemed to go away. Fast forward till today. I drove the jeep to the store sat at Hardees for over 30 miniutes and drove it home. We were getting ready for a little road trip so about 20 miniutes after I got home we tried to leave and the Jeep would spin over but not crank. Went inside and came back out a few miniutes later and it started right up. Figured it was just a fluke so off we took. Drove it for about an hour on the interstate pull up to a truck stop and went inside for about 5 miniutes . Came back out and no start again. Let it set for about 45 miniutes and bam it fires back up. Any ideas ?? I tried checking codes and nothing there and pushed the plunger on the fuel filter housing.. Thanks in advance !!!

That sounds like a classic Crank Position Sensor going bad. When they're on their way out, they'll start to give you trouble when they're warm. You might also want to check that the heat shield is still there. It seems like several PO's have taken them off for some reason.

In the engine block on the passenger side. Behind a heat shield.

The crank sensor can be easily changed from the underside of the vehicle. It has a small heat shield over it that has to be removed first to gain access to the hold down bolt on the sensor. Once you get this hold down bolt out, twist and pull on the sensor at the same time and it will pop right out.

A replacement can be obtained from Autozone with lifetime warranty:
• Autozone Duralast/Crankshaft Position Sensor (Bosch part in box)
• Part Number: SU8492

Definitely the crankshaft sensor, that is a textbook description of the symptoms when it dies.

Now... At 150k... Have you had the timing belt replaced or know for certain (ugly yellow sticker under the hood) that it absolutely has been done?
The lifespan is 100k or 6 years, both of which expired long ago for the original belts, yet some people were told by dealers (incorrectly) that it had a chain....

Thanks for the replies from all. I am going to AutoZone tomorrow to order the sensor. I really don't know if the timing belt has been replaced. Any way to check to be sure ?? Thanks once again for the replies.

The only sure way to know if the timing belt was replace at the right interval (100k miles) is by opening up the belt cover and inspecting it. If it hasn't been done by now is way over due and you are driving under death sentence. Just follow the links in this forum about replacing it; the timing belt in these vehicles is not any harder to replace than that on a twin overhead cam gasser engine. Do not let some of the post here scared you off from saving $500 in labor; if you are mechanically inclined you should be able to kick it out of the way using the knowledge in this forum. Some guys here have even become mechanics working off this much knowledge.

Since you probably haven't heard, don't have a dealership touch the timing belt (or anything else), as they tend to destroy the engine in the process.

I really appreciate everyones responses . A dealer would never touch my vehicles. I am poor so most if not all my work is done in the driveway. Between the Jeep a race car a motor home and a motorcycle I stay pretty darn busy. LOL
