We went out looking for a new truck today to replace my Wife's Rendesvous. We were just looking so we took the KJ. Even though I told them we would be trading the Rendesvous, I had 2 dealers ask me if I was interested in trading the KJ and after I told them it was a diesel they offered to buy it outright for whatever I owed on it, I asked the used car manager at the 2nd dealer what the deal was and apparently used small SUV's are selling like mad, in fact he said that he could probably get me close to what I paid for it on a trade, apparently with all of the incentives last year and not nearly the incentives this year and with the increase in gas prices small suv's are holding their value well and the CRD is that much more appealing.

My wife has already laid claim to the CRD if we get a new truck, we will not be trading it.

Thats good to hear, I have noticed this as well or at least that is what I've heard from all my cohorts in the auto sales business. The diesel engine alone should add at least another 10% to residual value, with the KJ CRD being such a hot model and in realitively low numbers... I'd say that we can all rest assured that it will retain its value very well. That is until, perhaps, more smaller diesel vehicles are introduced in the the NA market.

Last week I found a used '05 Limited with 20K miles at the dealership where I purchased my '05 CRD Limited.
The sticker on the window for the used Limited was $24,000. I then contacted a programmer friend at one of the largest auction houses where dealers purchase used cars from. Luckily the VIN's matched and he found that it cleared the auction at $19,000 wholesale.
Hope that helps.

Well I took my 2005 Liberty Sport CRD with 21,000 miles on it to a local Toyota dealership to see about trading for a new FJ Cruiser. They had never heard of a diesel Jeep and only offered $14,500 for it. This really shocked me I thought it should have been around $18,000. They could not find anything that showed what it should be worth in any of the books they used.

For giggles I followed the link and tried everywhere but couldn't find Liberty xxx CRD :( All I could find is what dealers had on their lots.

I have heard from local dealership that the only Liberty they can sell is the CRD. In the period since I bought ours last Oct, they have sold every CRD they could get their hands on. They sold 8 CRD's last month and 0 gas Liberty's, one of the salesmaen said if they could just get diesel Dakota & Durango they would be in fat city. If they get a get a diesel Dakota, they won't be able to give the gassers away.

Funny you should mention the diesel trucks Old Navy. I had a call from my salesman who remembered that I also looked at the Dodge diesels they also sell when I bought my '05 CRD last year. He said that they were getting in just a few of the Dodges in diesel that they pre-ordered, but that they wanted more. He said that if I would be willing to trade my CRD I would only lose about 10-15% on a new Dodge diesel (my CRD has 26k miiles). He said they have customers coming in and asking about the CRD, but they have none to sell anymore as their allotment is finished. He has gotten a few via trades with other dealers, but where I live in NH, two of the neighboring states MA & VT are part of the Calif. standards and do not sell diesels. He is restricted to trading in his zone which leaves him little option.

I have no interest in the Dodge Truck, but the lesson here is that the CRD is becomming a "desired" commodity much like the Jetta TDI. A local VW dealer had 3 TDIs advertised, but they were all in the 24k price range, with gas jettas in the 18s. The TDIs were loaded with all the options VW could hang on them, plus the dealer was adding a premium.

It just points out that DCX will do the same with the '08 diesels and only sell them on their most expensive and most profitable vehilcel: grand cherokee. I don't know about the trim levels on the GC, but I strongly suspect that the base model will not be available with a diesel.

To make a long story short, I'm keeping mine, even if I was a test market

Yea I think that the JGC CRD will not be anywhere near the surprise seller that the KJ CRD has been. If DCX doesn't allow the engine package in the Laredo (basic) model then I believe most will be sitting on dealer lots collecting dust until MY's end when people can buy one at a discounted rate. Even if the CRD package was available on the Laredo model, I would be the MSRP is $35k or so at the very least. For what you get with that model it is not worth the cost by any means.

I would hate to see this vehicle become some overpriced novelty item like VW's Toureg V-10 TDi, if DCX will price it within reason (vis-a-vis the Liberty CRD) I think it could be a homerun like the KJ CRD.

I noticed you left out the '07 diesel why is that? I suspect you will see '06 PU truck built longer to continue the sales, but at some point they have to stop to add the required (?) particulate traps on the PU's and whatever else required. Remember they don't have to start making 'o7 models till Jan '07 and also fuel will not be readly available till about Dec and everywhere by Jan so that will be the only thing hold up '07 diesels. Jeep had planned to drop/change the KJ for '07 due to slowing sales, now I hear rumors they may continue the the Liberty CRD models another year due to sales demand but I just don't think that will happen. However I think D/C will supprise us all between Oct and Jan with the announcements of things to come for '07 MY vehicles.

The diesel package for the Grand Cherokee will be available in both the Laredo and Limited trims (similar to how DCX marketed the Liberty CRD).

Something I have been thinking about is how complicated these modern cars & trucks have gotten and I wonder how the heck we will be able to keep them running after warranty period. Hard enough with a warranty, not sure I want any new car or truck out of warranty period.

I have about decided my next vehicle will be a lease for the period of warranty and then turn it in and go for another new one.

Any doubt as to resale value of the diesel Jeep, just look at what a '99 diesel MB 300 brings when compared to a gas model. The diesel value is about double the gas MB car, same applies to TDI VW's and diesel American PU trucks.

I don't know if you've just had some extreme problems with your vehicles or what, but its not like vehicles just fall apart the day after the warranties are up. Cars built today are lightyears ahead of what they were 20 years ago, also people are putting more and more miles on their vehicles today with most holding up very well even under the harshest abuse.

Sorry but I just cannot see where you are coming from on this, especially with a vehicle with a European made diesel engine. Everything surrounding the engine will fall apart before the engine does, well taken care of they can go a million miles and still run well.

I mean if you are that worried I'd tell you to go buy a Hyundai ;)

I would say that is a good concept, but bad from a finacial standpoint. By comparison to traditional financing, leasing will cost you more and you don't get to keep the vehicle. Plus there will be additional charges for any breach of contract - any damage to the vehicle as percieved by the dealership, additional miles, etc.

Being a former dealership manager I will tell you that we LOVED people who leased vehicles, that is guaranteed extra money in the bank for us! You cannot foretell if something will happen to the vehicle that you WILL be held accountable for ;)

Yep 100% correct. I don't believe with the CRD it's a question of keeping it running after the warranty is out but a question of economics. Do have a concern seeing how DC responds with replacement parts and how clueless CRD techs appear to be during service while still under warranty. It's one thing to play this game on their dime. When the warranty is over and the expenses shift to the owner it's a whole different set of economics. Just keeping the EGR & throttle body functioning is enough to kill the economics of this motor. This may very well become the achilles heel of this motor, on par with the injector pump problems with the Olds diesel.

Go to jeep.com, click on "certified pre-owned". Choose a wide radius (300 mi or "any") from your zip code, choose 2005 model year only, and see the results. Sort the list to show highest priced first. The only place you see the diesels is on the top of the list. Some are very close to what I paid last year new (but with discount), and definitely above your usual $5k drop off.

Time for an emoticon: :P

No problems with any vehicle but one Toyota in last 20 plus years, but it was a observation of the com[plexities of the modern auto, not just a Jeep CRD. The way most people buy and then trade every couple of years I have often wondered if lease would be better, seen the lease incentives from Chrysler?
