While working on my Jeep, I noticed that the turbo is not the OEM one, but some aftermarket one instead.

Googling some of the numbers on it, it appears to be this thing:

I'd assume it's one of the sketchy Chinese ones I've seen people mention. There's not really any shaft play to speak of; would you advise replacing it with the correct turbo, or keeping it and checking for play periodically?

Another thing about this turbo is that it doesn't sound like any other turbo I've heard. It doesn't make that normal turbo whine, instead when it spools it sounds kind of like a siren somewhere off in the distance (which might not be the best thing while driving!), or maybe someone switching on an electric leaf blower.

I don't know how to tell if it's a cheap Chinese rebuild or not.
How does the shaft feel?
Does it spin freely?
Do the blades rub against the housing?
Any forward-back, side to side shaft play?

My factory turbo has always been kinda quiet. More like a soft, distant whistle.

Send it to xsboost turbocharges in the akron/canton, Ohio area to get it balanced. Those Chinese turbos fail because they are either not balanced, or not balanced correctly. That is most likely the source of the whine, but even the factory turbos are super quiet.

If it was a genuine garrett, it would have GARRETT in raised letters cast into the intake side. Also garrett uses tags that are riveted onto the centersection to id the turbo. However some factory turbos do have a machined, flat area that is then "dot punched" to label it, but the lettering is far smaller since it not only lists garretts part # and serial #, but also the oe # for whoever the turbo was produced for.

Id be willing to bet its chinease made, its for sure NOT a garrett!

I don't think it's a rebuild; I think it's a whole new Chinese turbo. The numbers match the listings in the two links I gave, which say "Origin: China" and "Country of Origin: Jiangsu China (Mainland)".

The play is barely noticeable (I really have no experience with turbos, but it feels like others on here have described it should feel). No blades rubbing or anything like that.

It doesn't seem abnormally loud or anything, just not the type of sound I'd expect from a turbo.

I'm not concerned about it right now, but I've heard a lot of talk about these being ticking timebombs. I was just wondering since I have like half the engine apart now and the turbo just sitting on the workbench, whether I should put this turbo back in or get a legit Garrett one. From the responses so far I think I'll just stick with this one and try to keep an eye on shaft play every oil change or so.

I agree. It doesn't say GARRETT anywhere on the thing and the label in the flat area is definitely laser engraved rather than dot punched. Kind of unrelated, but the serial number begins with 140609, which I suspect may be the date code.

Looks like the one that was in mine when i bought it. It whistled a bit at low speeds. As soon as i saw it was not a garrett i ripped that thing out. I was always afraid it would break appart and ruin my engine.
When i searched i found them for under $450.00 on some website where everything is imported from china.
Leave that thing out.
