Listen guys, I have a problem with a Clion 30 amp relay.
I bought this relay with a harness (wihich i did not need) I only needed the 30 amp relay for my bull bar lights. I was only using an inline 30 amp fuse from the battery which poped 2 times. I know that what I did was not good, but it was a tempoary thing untill I got the 30 amp relay. And all I had to do was wire the fuse to the relay and wire the relay to the switch. And every thing is grounded.
Now the problem is, When I hook up the relay to my exsisting wiring it does not work. When I hook it up with the harness that it came with and some crappy plastic switch it works. I hook it up exactly it says and I can not get it to work with my current switch. Both switches are rated the same.

Whats the freaking deal?
I am good with electric and circuits but I can not figure this out...

any help would be great.

PS, I did go back to the store and exchanged the 30 amp relay for another one and had the same problem.

Can you draw up a quick diagram of how you have it wired? If you label the nodes of the diagram, I can give you some pointers on what to look for with a multimeter to test what is going.

If I had to guess (guessing is a Bad Idea before seeing a circuit diagram) I would say that the harness is connecting the switch to the relay differently than the way you are connecting the switch.

EDIT: Somebody had posted this image before showing how to wire lights, and I really like how complete it is. It might be good to compare your schematic to this one to check for possible mistakes:

7,

thanks for the quick replay.
I did use that diagram below, well now above. The diagram that came with the relay was more worthless then another hole in my head. LOL
Here is a picture of the relay that I am using.

Image

on the diagram that you replyed back with is labled differant then mine. Where the 30 and A and 87 is, I have 5 and 3. the other side hase a fused icon on it and ground. I hope you can see the picture that I edited.

Maybe its the harness? When i wired up my fogs that was my first problem. I got a harness from chrysler parts direct, it was for a jeep, but not necessarily for a liberty. The relay i used came with the fog lights. When i ran the wires, i realized that the wires running into the relay connector on the harness did not match up to pins on the relay. Using that diagram, I cut up the harness a little near the connector and switched the wires so that they matched up to the pin outs on the relay.

I think it is the swithc that came with it because It looks like it has a small pc board under the cover of the switch. I think maybe some how it is converting the power to the switch and maybe thats the reason why it will not work on my switch.

I did not use any wiring harness. I ran my own wires to the lights, battery/fuse , then to the switch. I made my own central grounding lead and every thing works fine, but between the 2 switches, something does not pan out.

That was my second problem...i forgot to install the mini relay under the drivers side dash. Maybe that pc board is acting like a mini relay and you have to add one between the switch and the main relay? My situation was a little different tho, i was using the fog switch on the factory combination switch, not an aftermarket rocker switch to turn the fogs on.

Do you have the diagram that came with it that you could take a photo of or scan? It might be helpful to see what they suggest you do differently than the typical case.

I can't see the diagram printed on the relay very well, especially the symbols on it are too blurry to make out.

I would suggest testing the relay outside the jeep so you know which pins are which. You should be able to apply 12V to the switch-side and hear a "click" as continuity is made on the other side. Make sure whatever source you use to test with is fused or current-limited, though, just as a percaution.

EDIT: I can sorta make out the diagram on the relay if I squint, I guess the 3+5 side does look like a switch. I initially thought it looked like a coil, but that's just the blur. I found a diagram of another similarly-numbered relay, it shows pins 1+2 being the load and 3+5 being the switch (which makes more sense, since pin 4 would be the opposite side of the possible dual-throw switch):
Image

so if you wire up pins 3+5 to a 12 v supply, it should go "click"

Wow, world record for the number of times I posted this, read it again, went back and edited it...

When I hook it up with the harness that it came with, I do hear the clicking of the relay, Then when I hook it up to my switch, I do not hear a click from the relay. The F-uped thing about it is I am getting voltage and I am getting resistance when ohming it out.
When I first saw this relay, I noticed it to be srange too not seeing the diagram to be normal.
The 3 to 5 is infact the switch side. That I know for sure, but the other thing from 1 to 2 is something that I have never seen before. It allmost looks like a fuse icon.

The diagram that it came with is so freaking small and it is hard to make out. I might have to draw it and upload the link.
I went to the website and that was worse then the diagram.
I am at the point to return this one and go get something else.

Where are you measuring? How many volts do you see across 3+5 and what is the resistance through 1+2?

I can't imagine it's that much different than normal, there must be something else funky going on here. What does the harness look like + where does it connect to?

Might not be a bad idea for simplicity, but I still think you will run into the same problem. The relay itself is obviously working if the provided harness can switch it, so something must be not quite right in the other switch.

Yeah, their page does suck. Flash 8 required, but flash 8 will never be released in Linux (they are holding off until flash 9 because they hate me, I swear)

I finally was able to contact the company and they told me that the relay that I bought was only ment to be used with their special pc board switch, and can not be used by any other switches.

Well I guess I found the problem

7,

thank you for helping me with this problem

Cool. Let me know what relay you end up using, I'm thinking of adding some new lights to my jeep (already have the switches I want), and I couldn't find anything larger than a 10A relay in the local electronics shop

Yea man,
I will let you know which one I end up with.
I forgot what the resistance between the 4 points. I know between 3 and 5 wah a reading of OL which it should be because it is an N/O side of the relay.

Any ways,

Man o man, and I thought that I was the only one that Linux was not helping...LOL

I found some relays online for like $1 or so. Much cheaper than I found in the electronics shops, even when you take shipping into account. I searched google for "30A relay" and clicked a few sites. I think I will shop around to find a cheaper shipping price ($8 to ship a $1 part sounds like eBay)

Hey Se7enLC

I picked up a Pro Series 30 amp relay for aux lights and horns from optronics. Bought it from autozone for 6 bucks.

All I did was re crimp my leads and run an extra lead from the batt to give my switch 12V and good lord it F*@KING worked.
It took about 10 mins to complete the re wire.

Thanks for your help with getting this freaking thing figured out.

The other switch really does not work with any switch. It was made for that APC relay which was a peice of crapp any ways.
