I see Jeepin By Al carries the OME 1.5 inch lift for the KJ. Has anyone assembled the front struts in their garage with hand tools and those cheap spring compressor's you can borrow from Auto Zone or do you have to bring it in to a shop and pay them to do it??

Dont do it with those cheap things. The coils get too close and half time they break and sends the springs across the shop. Not good. Pay the $30 like I did. Thats what Tommudd told me to do and it paid off.

Yep $30. I just took them to a local indy mechanic shop. I have found a few others and they charge 35-45. So still not much. And much safer than autozone crap. I have done atleast 10 with the local shop. Takes 10 mins and $30 later.

Thanks. That's definitely the way to go. What else would I need to assemble the strut?

New shocks and springs, plus all the wacky hardware off the old one. Check out the FAQ (which IMHO needs to be updated).

Only cost me 25 at my local muffler shop.... gonna have to find somewhere with a hydraulic press when i finally get 790s (soon hopefully). The hand crank one at the muffler shop wasnt mounted to put the kind of pressure needed, and i only have 926s. It would surely rip off the wall, and the 3 guys it took didnt seem to happy compressing that far either.

I managed doing OME 790 using a cheap pair of clamps plus 2 sash clamps pulling down on the top mounts. But its a bit like playing with a loaded weapon.

Some real friendly advise! If you do not have the proper tools for compressing strut springs and you are not familiar with or have experience with the process, take to someone or a shop that have the proper compression tool and experience. Compressing a coil spring tight enough to disassemble a strut without the proper tool is a VERY DANGEROUS operation and can severely injure, maim, or even kill you. Trying to use a cheap coil spring compressor kit from a parts store, which as others stated will not even compress the spring tight enough on the Jeep Liberty, is simply just not worth the risks!!! :dizzy:
Take it to a good shop that has a wall mounted spring compressor designed for the job and pay them, will be some of the best money you ever spent!

I know my warnings are strong words, but as an old mechanic, I have seen what a compressed coil spring will do when it pops out of a cheap compressor tool while a guy is wrenching on the compression nuts; it is not pretty and they my friend are not safe, especially in inexperienced hands!!!

So true, friend basically lost half his face
So when someone even suggests doing it with out the proper tools I cringe everytime
