You can rent a tool from Green Diesel Engineering for $40.00 with a deposit of $700.00. Call them at 248-977-9531. I own 3 Jeep liberty CRDs and I replaced the timing belts. Don from Huntingdon, Pa.

Another budget option for the timing pin set is freedom racing. Their part number is am-5056. On their site for $69.99. It comes with an aftermarket version of both cam locking pins, flywheel locking pin and the belt tensioner tool. I wound up borrowing one of the gates cam gear locking tools. It took a bit of fiddling and adjusting but it worked fine.

I will admit the quality of the tools are not top notch. I wound up using the intake pin on the exhaust and visa-versa. The exhaust pin just didn't thread into the exhaust side very nicely (rough threads it seemed).

Another trick my buddy showed me that worked awesome. When you putting the timing belt back on use zip ties the get it locked in the right teeth on the cam gears. It makes it much easier to work the rest of the tension to the right spots to make the teeth line up.

That kit is cheap China crap. They are on eBay for had that price. It also sounds like your buddy taught you the "mark and pray" method. The cam sprockets should be left loose when you put the belt on, then tension it, then torque the cam sprockets.

That kit is very much cheap Chinese crap. I agree and said in my post that it wasn't the greatest quality. I just put a new head and all the trimmings into this thing. That was one of very few places where money could be saved. Instead of renting I now own the pins and next time I have to use them I'll probably buy the gates cam lock tool as well

As for how I did my timing belt. The sprockets were left loose while we worked the belt around the rest of the pulleys, then tensioned, then torqued. Don't really see any other way to do it. After that you spin the motor 3 times if I remember correctly and check to see if the cheap Chinese timing pins go back in all three holes. Maybe a little prayer during that part. Then you're good.

Just used the zip ties to hold the correct tooth count between the two sprockets. The gent on the youtube vid used wood shims instead.

Right now the Miller VM.1085 retails between $687.23 and $701.25. Right now there is only 1 on eBay, listed for $694.10. Mopar dealership price is $561.00.

^ That's why we charge a $600 deposit.

Rental is $100 for 14-days and includes a free return shipping label. Easy.

Includes the VM.1085 cam lock tool, camshaft pins, flywheel pin and tensioner wrench.

X2.

I've loaned my Tools on a few occasions and some people have balked at the deposit.......thats what the deposit is for, to replace it in case you dont.

Man must have been after I borrowed them from you. I don't even think you made me pay a deposit, just like $60. I am in your state though.

Not to correct you but you have to spin it in even numbers. Also with the cams being loosing you don't need any specia thing or "count" teeth between cam sprockets. With them loosing and getting the belt on once you tension that will do the work. All the timing is in the cams and crank.

Good idea with the zip ties to help hold the belt in place while trying to route it. I didn't realize how easy the injection pump gear turns either. Will try again tonight, with better luck!

I mark everything with silver sharpie reference points before I yank the belt. They all have timing marks except the water pump and idlers. The crank sprocket does not either but you should have the pin in the flywheel so you know its @ TDC .. I know its unnecessary on the cam sprockets but its useful to set the marks for me. The hardest part is chasing that last tooth or 2 worth of slack around to the tensioner area without moving the CP3 off of its timing mark.

There is a mark on the main crank, I've never used the flywheel pin, cause I've never been able to get it in the hole in the fly wheel

I hope Im not scaring you,

I use the Miller Pins before I yank the belt too lol, I just use the sharpie marks as a refrence.. as you can never have to much information. usually the crank pin does not want to fit exactly right probably due to belt strech or something....

Just an update: I ended up using a cam tool from matco tools. Actually worked pretty well. The torque is only 80 ft lbs. on the bolts.
