hello, I have a 06 crd that I switched to 5w-40 at 2000 miles. I just checked the intercooler hoses and there is a coating of oil in them. I want to do the open vent mod, and I have done several searches and read the posts, but I still don't know which hose do you disconnect. Does any one have any pics or a detailed description of exactly which hose it is. I just keep reading "I disconnect the hose on top of the motor" in the posts. I have removed the engine cover, but I'm still not sure which one it is.

On the top of the engine there's a "hockey Puck" with a black hose running foward. Pull the hose off the puck and fit a rubber hose from the puck and route it downward. Then plug the end of the hose you removed. Or you can do as I did and get a Pro-Vent and put it over by the passanger fender.

Pull the hose of the round black thing pictured below and put a 3/4" plug in that hose, very important to do this or you will have big problems.

Put a 3/4" hose on to the male end you just pulled the hose off of and run it over and down on the driver side where it can drip and hose is not against the engine block. I used a clear hose to be able to see the amount of oil going through the hose.

thank you - I'm glad I asked because that is not the hose I was thinking it was. Is it petter to plug that hose off completely or to use something like a pcv valve?

You pluge it off completely, other wise you will be sucking unfiltered air and grit direct into your turbo. That hose goes to the air intake tube that comes from the air cleaner going to the turbo. Below is a picture of mine with the Elephant hose mode. The black hose you remove and plug is hard to see because I have it zip tied to coolant hose off to the left as you look at the picture. I have a clear hose installed so as to see how much oil is blowing through. Not really, it was just some tubing I had laying around so I used it to save a dollar.

I just hit 2800 miles and changed my oil to Mobil Synthetic 5w-40 and this post peaked my interest.

Why would the 5w-40 cause the oil buildup in the hose?
Is it really the oil weight that is causing the buildup?
What am I hurting if I don't do this mod and am still running the oil(if it is the oil weight)?
What is that hose for?

Thanks,
WWV

5w40 helps reduce the amount of blowby. it has been said that the stock 0w-40 causes more oil in the hose

The oil oil weight has nothing to do with the oil conming into the system, both are 40w oils. One just has the properties at cold temps of 0w while the other has 5w at same temps, it is the volatility (the vapor point for want of better word) of the oils that may cause some difference.

The problem you will have with a Close Crankcase Ventilation system is it will suck oil out of the valve cover into the intake where it mixes with the soot from the EGR. This (oil) will not be that big a problem after switch to ULSD, but it will cause problem as far as hose life for the Intercooler system is all and eventually the intercooler will need draining of the oil and cleaned.

Do a searech as to Elephant hose mod for what it does.

Just performed open vent surgery last night and asked myself why they had to dump ccv into the intake tube before turbo. Couldn't they have dumped it downstream of the innercooler directly into the intake hose? Maybe I'll figure out some way to do it if my wife complains about the vapor cloud coming from under the Liberty.

It's pulled-in at that point to take advantage on the natural vaccume. After that, the enging is pressure fed. Put it in any place later would require a pump.

AAAaagh! I openned up the hose and there, to my extreme horror, was a completely oil coated hose all the way to the post-airfilter intake. OH MY GOD WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?! Why bother with an airfilter at all? There isn't even a bend or loop in the hose to collect the oil, it slopes all the way down to the air intake. OH, THE HUMANITY!!! Does the DC set-up serve ANY purpose? Can't see this dinkly hose warming the intake air significantly or changing much of anything.

Yeah yeah I'm using 0w oil, and might consider 5w for the summer, but STILL. C'MON!!! Frickin' idiots. No TSB on this?

DC how about an even better idea, lets just route the whole exhaust pipe back into the engine unfiltered....wouldn't that be great for emmissions?! Argh!

I'm unhooking it immediately and doing the drain mod.

May the gods of engine design should strike them down.....

When I installed a Provent and cleaned all this mess, I had oil vapor almost back to the MAF sensor. I truely believe there is at least one DC engineer quietly saying "I told you this was a bad idea." That hose has only one purpose, to take crankcase vapors that are harmful to the environment and recirculate them to a place where they can be treated by emission control hardware. What I can't understand is how this set-up can pass an emissions test with this much oil coming through the air intake. If burning higher concentrations of biodiesel raises the NOx too high to pass emissions, how can burning motor oil make it through?

Burning motor oil ain't much different then burning diesel. What is the difference, oil is oil, and used motor just has some extra carbon in it to be finished burned off.

I just purchased my diesel two weeks ago. At 400 miles there was a film of oil in the tube between the turbo and intercooler. I installed the open vent system with a slight modification of including a cheap valve cover breather to keep out any dust particles. I am rather disappointed that this modification is needed to prevent oil in the induction system, in a brand new vehicle. In my opinion this is just poor execution and quality control, and at the very least DC should pay for the Provent valve, that I will be installing.

Just make sure your add on valve cover breather doesn't plug and cause the crankcase to build up pressure. You really don't need a filter because the flow is always out. It might condense some of the oil out and keep it in the engine which would be good. If you get DC to pay for a Provent, let us know for sure.
