I like the overall look of the Colorado, but I like all my toys within the body rather than a bed with a topper. Also every pickup driver I encounter seems to have had a lobotomy during the purchase process, they all drive like MORONS. Chevy also has more than a few computer issues that I don't like, not the least of which: If you have an accident, they VOLUNTEER to hand over the computer data to your insurance carrier, which logs at least the previous few seconds to unknown minutes of vehicle metrics, and their Onstar system has just about continuous access to that data too - so it could be getting logged all the time.

I did some playing around with the configurator for the Colorado a day or two ago, and was not really happy with the type of vehicle it was forcing me to take.

What I want is a 2-door, extended (not crew) cab model with the long bed, 4WD, diesel. Apparently, the only way to get one in that configuration is by ordering the ZR2 package, which starts at $45,895. That's getting into year-old lease-return WK2 territory, and really high-trim WK2s at that. Adding the skid plate package (which also forces you to take AEV-made rims and other items) adds nearly $6K to the price - and requires getting the truck in bright red, a colour I do not want.

Gripe of the day: I hate trim packages. It's a truck, FFS. Let me go a la carte on it so that I can build it to do what I need it to do.

There's no way in HELL that I'd ever willingly accept that plug-this-in-for-maybe-$30/year-in-savings monitoring devices that the carriers are now advertising heavily... I'm certainly not buying a vehicle that has it hard-coded into the body. That rules out any GM product for me.

Re: the discount devices: absolutely not; we're in total agreement on that, and handing over pre-accident data that the vehicle logged is just as bad. We have a friend of the family who got into a 6-month fight with their insurance company that turned into a lawsuit because of it - the insurance company refused to accept their version of events (dead vehicle in their lane on a curve at night, no hazard lights on) because the on-board logs said they were 3mph over the speed limit. AFAIK, that fight is still ongoing.

I don't know much about the newest Grand Cherokees though, but there is plenty of time to learn about them.

Ditto. Drove one this weekend (an '18) and liked it. Didn't do much more than run it a couple of miles up the freeway and back to the dealership, but it drove well and even with the transmission in normal mode had good power. Have heard that they can have injector issues if they're used only for short trips where they never get fully warmed-up, but am still looking into it. Not a huge fan of the air suspension (works well when it works; likely an expensive nightmare to fix if it doesn't), but may warm up to it. Still have a lot of reading up to do on them, though.

The OnStar tracking is a legitimate concern, IMO. You can opt-out of some of the OnStar Smart Driver/Insurance personal information sharing, which I did, but GM needs to allow the customer to completely opt-out (opting out and/or unsubscribing entirely still doesn't prevent them from collecting and sharing "anonymous" data and doesn't turn off the cellular data connection to GM). You can of course physically disable OnStar, but not without losing some potentially desired functionality: https://www.coloradodiesel.org/threads/ ... e-up.5131/

I'm also not a fan of the always-on WiFi.

We live at the top of a cul-de-sac that dead-ends against a major street. Our home network is built on enterprise-grade hardware; as a result, it's constantly keeping tabs on - and logging - other wireless access points in the area that it can pick up. This is normal for that class of hardware, and it's typically done to improve performance in environments where the WiFi bands are congested.

Between about 7am and 9am, there are a whole slew of access points turning up with names like 'CindysTahoe' and 'MikesCruze'; these also show up again between about 4.30pm and 6.30pm. Watching the logs for two or three days gives a fairly decent idea of someone's movements between home and work along that major street based on the hours that the vehicles' access points are visible. It would be trivial for someone to figure out which cars have specific access points, follow them home, and case a residence for a break-in.

There's also the potential for this to be used for just monitoring a vehicle's movements around a locale, which no law enforcement agency would ever even think of quietly doing, because they always operate in an above-board and ethical manner. </sarcasm> Live in or drive through a place with municipal WiFi? You're trackable, and there's no real oversight of it happening.

Shovelling technology into vehicles just because it can be done is one of the worst things to have happened in the last 15 years or so.

That's a good point. The same thing is done with our personal cell phones, for example retail stores track Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to monitor shopping habits...Our personal data is worth a lot of money, and there are not enough protections in place. Privacy has been eroded across the board.

Yep. And we've given in to it willingly in exchange for... No real tangible benefits.

I have a 20-year professional background in Information Security, and will continue to be baffled as to why people seem to think that their privacy doesn't matter. No matter how many attempts are made to educate people as to what they're giving up, the argument of, "well, I'm not doing anything anyone would care about, so why does it matter?" always seems to win out over being able to play Farmville on Facebook

I just moved out of our 06 Liberty and into a WK2. I immediately put a GDE tune on it and I couldn't be happier. It's a bit bigger and a much better highway ride. I'll miss the little KJ but it has a more than capable replacement.

The only thing I have to do now is get rid of all the spare parts / upgrades I was collecting for the Liberty... I don't think I'll be putting a webasto on the WK2.

I did the "physical opt-out" by disconnecting the onstar antenna in my gmc as soon as I figured out shortly after buying it that not having the service did not mean not having the connection. I also keep my phone in a faraday bag unless I need to use it. But I am very funny about my privacy...

Good to know, because that's more or less my game plan if we end up with one.

Out of curiosity, have you done any towing with it? If so, how did it perform compared to the KJ? I'm looking to get closer to the 7000lbs. mark and was curious as to how it does at around 6500lbs.

I haven't towed yet and I'll tow in the 2-3k lb range but I expect the longer wheelbase will make for a smoother experience.

Cool. That's actually one of the things I'm considering, as well as better highway manners in general. Doing 10-plus-hour drives in the KJ is doable, but I'm increasingly finding it less than optimal.

I've been using the wife's wk2 to do some towing and it definitely is a nice ride. I have a WK2 as well, but I haven't put the hitch on it yet. Did you have the emissions recall done yet? My dealer just did both of mine. Lost about 2 mpg. As soon as I get the emission money from Jeep, I'll look at the GDE tune for both. Warranty is up on one, but I still have a couple years left on the other.

I'm in Canada so we didn't get emissions settlement money, just a weak inefficient tune.
