Taroo - Excellent, glad you got it sorted!

Another possibility for a no-crank situation is the solenoid pack in the transmission. THIS is where the park / neutral interlock is located, and NOT in the actual handle assembly. If the transmission solenoid is unplugged... Dead stick. The computer will boot up, but you get nothing when requesting a start. Unfortunately the solenoid pack is replaced as a unit, the sensor is not a separate piece. I don't yet know if there is any way to directly communicate with that sensor or if there is a code when it dies... But that's where we are at the moment. Replacing the solenoid pack isn't terribly hard, but it is a bit messy.

Now that is a valuable piece of information to have as our CRDs continue to age.

Glad to see you got it started. You need to thank Sir Sam for that video ! I find many of his CRD videos interesting.

Well... Here's what I can say about that, 3 months later. Apologies for not replying sooner, but there was some personal stuff going on at the end of last year and I basically took a break from the Internet for a while in order to better sort things out. Anyway:

Took it to the dealer to have the ECU reprogrammed. They found that the ECU and FCM were fine, but that there was some significant wiring damage under the hood. This appears to have been naturally-occurring (in the sense of exposure to heat and vibration for 15 years) and not the result of poor previous repairs or collateral damage (e.g., from a fire).

Can't remember offhand which wires were affected, but it was a half-dozen or so circuits. Jiggle things the right way, everything works. Jiggle them the wrong way, dead Jeep. In any event, it was a problem for which I didn't have tools on hand to properly chase down, so the dealer was the best and only option. In fairness to them, they did an excellent job and only charged 4 hours labour for it, which seems reasonable given the work involved.

Anyway, the KJ got me home and has been surprisingly uneventful since then. Thanks to everyone for the help; it really was appreciated. I think I owe a few folks here a beer (or preferred equivalent) at some point ;)

Good to hear from you and glad you got it fixed. Shorts are a real PITA to figure out a lot of the time. It seems they were pretty reasonable and tried to do the right thing.

You might want to post the dealer information since they were so helpful and others might use them in the area.

I never leave home without packing my Laptop under the seat in case I pick up a problem....especialy on a long trip!

I have had plenty ongoing wiring problems due to a front-end collision....also wiring problems right back near the ECM which had nothing to do with the collision....these aging KJs I predict are going to pick up lots more wiring problems!

Having the Laptop with me gives me access to all the KJ Service Manuals so I can look up the CELs....have to use the "key" trick on this old 2002 CRD. I have not yet had to do major wiring-tracing on the open roads but have picked up CELs and could look them up to see if this was a major problem or something that I could limp home with to sort out at home!

If really needed I can get on the Internet to post an urgent question on the various Jeep Forums but the time difference would be a major problem....at least I could then work on the problem come daylight.

I carry all the needed tools...mainly my trusted Fluke Digital Multimeter, spare wiring/switches, a large plastic sheet in case I have to climb under the Jeep and a large Safari Hat to keep the sun off my balding head!
