There's someone local to me who is looking to get rid of the LSD out of his KJ for a pretty fair price. I'm stuck with the open diff for now and not enough money to afford a true locker. Will the factory LSD fit in the open diff carrier?

Thanks

You would be swapping carriers when you do this. The only time you swap anything INTO the existing carrier is when you install a lunchbox locker or a mini-spool. You should be good to go as the axles/housings are the same.

OK, well i guess my question then is, how difficult is it to do yourself (including setting the backlash)? or expensive is it to have a shop fit the LSD and set the backlash?

I was discussing a swap with someone that has an open carrier with my LSD and carrier, since he wanted an LSD and I wanted a full locker. It seems so much easier to swap both axles than just the carriers, since the backlash and other adjustments will be needed. Axle swap would be brakes and calipers, lower control arms, and the wishbone arms (for a total of 8-10 bolts). Maybe find an axle from the junkyard, and sell the other one.

Its not hard at all to get in and out, its setting the backlash that takes some skills. I guess painting the teeth and turning it is the best way for a guy at home to set it?

well how do you set it to begin with, this will be my first time in a rear end (wow...that sounds HORRIBLE  ) so i don't know if you use shims or an adjustment screw or what, but i know there is a special indicator grease and or a gauge, i'm assuming the latter is more accurate and more expensive, but i don't really mind if it means doing it right. Alternatively, any thoughts on what it would cost a shop to do? I'm assuming somewhere around $150-$300....depending on how much they hate you?

To set backlash, you will not have to paint the teeth. That is for measuring pinion depth, which will not change with the carriers. The two parameters that will change are preload and backlash. the 8.25 CHRYS rearend use threaded adjusters on each side, so it is fairly easy to set both. There is a tool that slides in the axle tubes that engages the adjusters. However, that means removing the axle bearings. I made a tool years ago that will allow you to adjust the collars from the rear. it is basically a flat piece of 1/8 x 1/2 x 12" steel with a tang on it to grab the aduster holes. Kind of line a spanner wrench, but with only one tong.

To set back lash, you will need a dial indicator to measure of the ring gear.

Don't forget, the ring gear bolts are fine thread and left hand thread.
