Just wondering if anyone has any experience with an electric Turbo in any vehicle. It just seems like it would make things a lot simpler and with less parts as well as easier to get cool air to turbo faster spinup etc. I am not talking about one for a CRD just in general.

It's important to note that Audi's solution relies on a totally separate 48v electrical system and not a standard 12v car system. Driving a 7kw motor is not something one does with a generic 12v automotive system. Honeywell's (Garrett) has been working on electrically supplemented turbos for years and not really gotten anywhere. While there are some current, decent low pressure electrically driven turbos, they would have little to no value running solo on a CRD engine... we are taking a couple pounds of boost on a small displacement motor... not something that could produce 1.5 bar on a 2.8l.

Some LeMans race cars used “electric” turbos.
They are traditional exhaust driven turbos with an added electric motor that eliminates turbo lag, keeps it spooled up between shifts, and can provide a short boost when passing.
The electric motor is only used for brief moments, not continuously.
And if the electric motor fails you still have a normal turbo.

Thanks for replies. I wasn't sure how much power they would consume if it 7kw thats about 9 hp and it couldn't be 12 volt just because of the amperage and size wires etc unless it converted to AC power which some of the new golf cart type hunting vehicles do. Still about 145 amps at 48 volt dc etc. I am still surprised not to see it tried more especially in electric hybrid cars that already have high voltage source.I would have guessed more like 4 or 5 hp needed.

Everyone already covered it. Turbos can use a LOT of HP to drive the air. 50+ HP is not a big deal for even a 2.8L turbo.

A 50hp electric motor would be no joke.

And then you have to carry around that much weight in the windings for that motor - Even the motor that drives a Tesla is officially rated at just 14HP, and that one takes a hoist to lift it.

Huh? Pretty sure they are rated at hundreds of HP.

Er, yeah... the smallest motor is like 362hp / 270 kW powered by an 85kwh battery.

These are a couple of videos I watched that peaked my interest
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7a_J2X88fSE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbJOhKlcd1k

There are numerous others. It at least makes me think that there may be a lot of "booster" electric turbos in the future if the internal combustion engine remains popular

By that I mean just to aid low RPM boost or for a few extra pounds of boost to pass etc . I certainly don't think it would add that much weight to do this. A whole electric only Turbo is a whole other question.
