I dont know what it is that Im doing but Im starting to only get like 300miles on a tank and thats 18-19 gallons going back in. which puts me in the 15-16 MPG area!

I really want a boost gauge so i can see whats happening. She has really started to feel laggy and slow. I hardly ever "floor it" unless i have to in traffic. I know you need to get her wound out every once and a while but MPG this low seems really bad, I cry every time some one says they get 400-500 miles a tank.

Has anyone installed an digital boots controller? or a turbo timer yet. Im very tempted to rip my buddys Greddy units out of his car and install them. My F150 4x4 with the 4.6L got better MPG than this....

Is it dealer time for me?

Just turned 5000 miles on my '06 and the mileage hasn't been better than 22 mpg. City driving, slow highway driving, fast highway, mileage is the same. I know how to drive a car for mileage and have always met or beat EPA posted MPG in other cars. This is starting to get expensive. The dealer told me it takes awhile to break in. I think 5000 miles is plenty for things to loosen up.

The last tank of fuel, I decided to see if I could get worse mileage. I mashed on the pedal at every light, kept the pedal down at every opportunity. The mileage didn't go down very much, maybe 1-1.5 MPG. I'm starting to think something is wrong because that kind of driving should have really sucked the fuel. For one tank, right after the reflash, I got 26 MPG, same driving routine I use every day.

Maybe someone with a service manual can post the trouble shooting procedure for poor mileage.

I have almost 12K miles. Ive said before yabe its my lift and the 245's but not this bad, infact most the guys with the same mods are getting pretty normal milage.

I use to race the hell out of it and would get more like 19-20 and thats ok but 15-16 is pushing it a bit. this is about the 3rd tank thats been this way, but the most ive ever got out of it was about 380-90 miles on a tank at long distance mild highway driving at 65-70mph.

what is the trouble shooting for this, ive tried different diesel, stick with the same brand, ulsd, lsd slow driving, fast driving. Help???

The Sunday before Fathers Day I reset my EVIC and did town to city and city driving all week, about 2/3 - 1/3 with an overall average of 21.8. On Fathers Day I took a tour with my daughter and her boyfriend, about 160 miles with the EVIC starting at 21.8. The trip was lots of open road but about 40 miles was city and mountain roads driving slow and stop and go. My EVIC was reading 27.2 by the end of the day. I have about 11K miles. To boast from 21.8 to 27.2 I had to have been doing quite a bit at over 30 MPG for the open road portion. None was at freeway speeds, most at around 60 mph.

All I can add is my own experience. My mpg started out very low at about 20-21 for the first few tanks. As the mileage increased, the mpg went up slowly to about 22-23 around 12k miles. Then starting at about 20k miles it increased again and I am now getting an "honest" 25-26 on a 80% hiway use @ 75mph. I have gotten as much as 28, but never 30 as some claim. I have an '05 sport with about 28k miles In fact, I just finished a long trip with my canoe on top of the car doing 75 on the hiway and climbing "back roads" and using 4wd. That trip got me 24.5. I usually fill up when the light comes on and add 18 gal for 475+/- miles. Around here, that fill up is right around $ 50.00. The car has no evic, so I do the math (or at least my calculator does)

So, just wait. It really does not come into its own (at least mine did) until about 20-25k on the odometer

Mine can't seem to get better than 20.5 hand calculated.

I've only 13,000 miles worth of experience with the CRD Libby, and know much more about the VW TDIs, so feel free to take my comments with a grain of salt.

I do know that the VWs can show much lower mileage if the injection timing gets out of spec, typically retarded, and I wonder if this might be you guys' problem. It is adjustable, but requires special tools and experience to do, but it should be possible for the dealer to determine what the timing is. Experience on the VWs is that you want the timing set toward the advanced side of the allowable range.

I need to add that in my first 7K miles I was not getting into 5th gear often. I simply spend little time on freeways and if your max highway speed is 55 or 60 MPH you will never see 5th gear. You need to get it up to about 64 then settle back to about 58 or 59 and 1600>1650 RPMs to get the mileage up.

A couple of things. I have a Garmin Street Pilot and my speedo reads exactly 2.5mph slower than the speedo so I though WOW my mileage must be lower than I thought. Then I used the Garmin to calculate the miles driven and I am sitting at 1/2 tank after all city driving.. The KJ Odometer reads 216...the garmin reads 234. That is only 16 miles difference but it is the opposite direction of the speedo.

So for 10 gallons or so I an really getting 1.6 more mpg if I trust the Garmin. I remember when I had my 3.7L that the mph were almost right on after my first set of tires which were 245.70/16s (taller than the 235/70/16's that came on it ).

This means the mpg figures you are using to calculate could be off. Going to keep watching it for a while but so far I have been getting 19.5 city and the only road trip I got 26.2 based on the KJ odometer.

 First, instead of guessing from "Gee, I think I am almost empty and I only got approximately 300 miles on this tank when I pretty much filled up", measure it exactly, moron. Miles driven/gallons consumed=MPG--not rocket science. Secondly, racing "the hell out of it" implies to me that at least historically you don't really give a darn about mileage and are posting "MPG = Crap" for some ulterior, flaming reason.

Get back to us when you grow up.

Well one thing could be that the ECU and TRANNY have learned how you drive and have adjusted to that. Maybe you should disco your battery overnight and hook it back up in the am. Then drive normal...not flooring it or soft pedaling it...just normal. Check the mileage and average more than one tank to come to a conclusion. 4-5 tanks will average out any fill up differences.

You say your mileage is bad then you say I want to rip out my friends Greddy stuff...doesn't add up...plus a boost guage and turbo timer are not going to get you better mileage. Yeah the turbo guage will let you know how heavy your right foot is but you already know

I have seen a number of comments suggesting that the EVIC is not a reliable source and that may be but it is consistent. I don't have a GPS currently and fuel tank refills are notoriously risky on a tank by tank calculation IMHO as there is no way to really know if your tank is full unless you burp it, the tank is level and bring the fill right up to the top of the filler neck. Some of that error levels out with time if you measure over very long periods and you really know how far you have traveled based on a true mileage.

The EVIC may not be accurate but it should be constant and is supposed to be comparing the actual fuel injected against the odometer. If it is calculating the fuel right then the other variable would be the odometer. Again I don't have a GPS so I have used the only other tool available, highway mile markers. I know these are not always accurate either but I have calculated against them multiple times in multiple places for over 30 miles at a stretch in two different states and the result is generally between 6% and 7% low. I get passed a lot if I drive the speed limit too so I am guessing that the error is pretty close. I am not going to complain about the error though until my mileage warranty is out.

If you take that 27.3 I got on Fathers Day though that would boost me up to 29 MPG. In addition that was starting at 21.8 average on about 180 miles which would have diluted the higher mileage figure. In other words, had I calculated just the Fathers Day tour it likely would have been several MPG higher than the overall mileage and likely would have pushed me above 30 MPG.

All that aside, just be patient and keep driving. Try to get it into 5th as much as possible. My early mixed driving was 16-18 and my highway was around 24 with one 300 mile drive up to 27. Now mixed it is 21-23 and I'll take a stab that if I drove cross state it would be 28-32. Should be able to confirm that in a few weeks.

Wasn't it your Jeep a few weeks ago in the video clip having an epileptic siezure? Did that problem ever get fixed?

I have watched the speedo over the last two weeks and the mph is off 2.5 miles across the board which means the EVIC would be consistent. I do think the miles traveled might be off so in reality we are could be getting a little better mpg than we think. Mileage seems to off by 6.5% or so. That means that at 20 mpg figured by using the odometer could possibly be 21.3 mpg.

Anyone else have a GPS that can verify? Or could someone travel a 10 mile route by marker signs and see if they can see any difference? I would hope that your odometer would read 9.4 miles.

I had dealer change my spedo setting when I got new tires: 245/70. I checked with my hand held gps and found spedo to be accurate within 1% at 25/40/70mph.

Wonder how accurate it was at stock?

How about the mileage...could you keep an eye on mileage vs odometer for 100 miles or so? That would help

That is exactly what I did in May over a 280 mile or so round trip. I checked it in 10, 20, 30 and 40 mile intervals both down and back (about 8 times total) and through at least three different Washington State Highway Department districts. Each check averaged around 9.4 within a tenth up or down. I thought it might be that the Liberty odometer had been programmed as a gasser with 17" tires but if I am not mistaken that would have errored the other direction.

I also checked it between the trip odometer on the EVIC and the speedometer and found the two to be reading the same.

I know it's been hashed over before, but from what I've seen, the biggest variable in MPG is the quality of fuel in your area. I've seen mine go from 30 mpg on one tank to 22 mpg on the next and then back to 30 mpg on the third, driving from NC to TX, just because I was in a different area of the country, having to fill up with a different brand of fuel from a different refinery each time.

With the current lax specs for what qualifies as diesel fuel, it's nothing more than a crapshoot as to what you're getting for cetane level, cleanliness, water content, etc., unless you actually bother to take a sample and have it analyzed for each station in your area to see which one has the best fuel.

This is exactly what I am and have been going through up to 8000 miles currently. I consistanly get 22 MPG on average with probably about 75% of my driving being highway about 65-75 MPH. The absolute highest average MPG I've gotten is 23.3 MPG but cannot seem to get any higher for any reason. I drive very conservatively as well and run B2 fuel in it, I guess I'll just have to wait to break'her in a bit more...

I just completed a 300 mi. trip: 87 mi. in town the rest mountain roads. The computer said 32.6 mpg when I pulled into the driveway. Even considering it's over by 1.5 miles, that's still not bad for only 3K on the engine. Straight Dino, AC on, 55-70 mph.
