Friend climbed my usual 22% grade 1/4 mile paved county road to my place and had some issues. Only would say engine lugged, quit, restarted, and was under powered climbing rest of hill. I prior told him he needed to be in 2nd gear with RPM kept above 2,000; and I suspect, he did not shift down nor maintained 2,000. Went to use my 2005 Liberty CRD with 140K miles discovering the transmission position is off by one. Park=Reverse, Neutral=Drive, and so on; so, no longer reach Park on the transmission while the shifter says in Park locking the transmission. Weird. Started car in Park (Reverse), shifted to Neutral (Drive) and moved the car to my garage for work. The driver position shifter adjustment (roughly 1/4-1/5 inch via a single nut) shows NO change. Under SUV end of shifter cable moves the transmission to all the proper detents and its adjustment shows NO change. Popping off the shifter cable underneath, I can manually shift the transmission to all the proper positions. With cable on, shifts the same. This issue must be INSIDE the transmission; but, what? Trouble codes are: 0093, 0101, 0102, 0340, 0700, 1140, 1189, and 1263. After erase, start car, run shifter through range, then codes are: 0102, 1140, and 1263. The battery was fully charged before doing diagnostics. Being a diesel, the local mechanics around my coastal hamlet of 20,000 will not touch passenger diesels; even if its to just replace a failed alternator. I have been doing my own work for decades now since diesel support means getting vehicles to the nearest major city an hours drive inland. Figure I may need to drop the oil pan and remove the valve box to continue looking for something obvious that I can repair - OR - call the junk yard... Fortunately, I recently purchased a 2011 Toyota Tacoma with 112K miles in excellent condition that was to be just a backup mid-size tow SUV/truck.

Sounds like your cable has partly failed (fraied) inside the housing and has stretched so it is no longer pulling the lever far enough when putting the shifter in Park.
Replace the shifter cable.

Thanks for the image now saved in my files. An issue with the cable length and position was my first thought; but from under the Liberty, the shifter runs through the entire range hitting all the appropriate detents. I even disconnected the cable and manually shifted with the engine running experiencing the same responses of Reverse-Neutral-Drive-2nd-1st-and something since the "Park" was no more. Remember that the positions WERE suppose to respond as Park-Reverse-Neutral-Drive-2nd-1st. Its as though the internal detents for each gear have shifted by one as everything external to the transmission checks good. The image of the interior shows the movement of a rod with presumably multiple O-rings (pg 78 of the manual referenced next reply).

Based on your info, sounds like something internally has a problem?
Guess you will have to open it up and inspect to see if there is a problem inside? :juggle:

Manual can be downloaded for future use. :)
